  • Diesel Guys come on in!

Looking at possibly purchasing a Later year 6.0 powerstroke or a 6.4 powerstroke, possibly a Cummins if i find a nice one...

Question is, most of the 6.0s i am finding are 150k+ miles with the EGR delete done, some with studs, but is it still a safe truck to buy? im hoping to find one to have for a good number of years as a daily driven truck but with a random road trip or towing the ski boat.

    Thoughts?

Better to buy with deletes and studs already done.

I bought my 2006 6.0 bone stock in feb of 2013 with 148k miles. I ran it up to 207k miles feb 2014 when the oil cooler went out. While the truck was down i had the oil cooler replaced along with egr delete, studs, new head gaskets, whicked wheel II in the stock turbo housing, 4" exhaust from turbo back and canned SCT tunes. It now has 230k miles and is running great. Its a completely different truck since I got all the work done to it and I plan to run it until the wheels fall off.

When I had my car lot, I sold well over 200 high mileage diesel trucks every year. Only super dependable diesel engine was the 7.3. 5.9's are nice til you run into anything fuel related. Injectors will rape your ass.

Value, and truck if I were to buy a diesel truck I would get either a Duramax Late 05 and up or a 05 and up 6.0. For the money, and the truck you get you cant fade a 6.0. Do the upgrades, and find a nice king ranch, and youll be beyond happy.

I had everything done at once so it was almost 5k. Not sure what just a oil cooler replacement would have cost.

about 98% of the over 130k mile used truck market was complete, utter worn out junk when we were looking last year. Ended up getting a two "old fart" owner 04.5 Ram 3500 with 120k miles and was decently maintained off a guy on ebay. went around his ebay ad and paid cash.

We also bought an 08 Ram 2500 with a few dents, but only had 62k miles on it. Got both trucks for about the same price as dealers were asking for the junk they had so no terrible deals.

We stayed the hell away from the Fords because of all the problems and 9 times out of 10, folks are getting rid of trucks because they were tired of the problems or high maintenance costs.

Get something that doesn't need any special needs and has already had all the weak points fixed or removed and you should be fine. Buying one that is "stock" is a ticking time bomb. Buy from private owners only if possible for you.

Personally, I prefer the Dodges because that is what I know and have had great service out of....so far. Wife had an 06 duramax and we couldn't get rid of that uncomfortable POS fast enough.

Not sure what years you are looking at but that actually sounds cheap compared to what we saw a year ago.

Some 04-06 dodge 3500's are going for north of 20k with that sort of mileage for a 2WD with missing radio and filthy inside. the 04 we found looks brand new inside and only had the usual rock chips on the nose and dually fenders. Even still has the original clutch!

Look for other stuff that wears out and will need to replaced right away like carrier bearings and u-joints. Even though the engine is a "baby" at 130k miles, the rest of the truck is still the same crap that fails or wears out.

I'm just trolling... Diesel trucks will always dominate when you need to pull something really big. That being said, a modern gasoline truck is really capable as long as it is equipped right, you don't overload it, or pull something all of the time.
