  • What Transmission?

I have a 1989 Coupe with a stock block, vortech, H/C/I, etc. Just got the car back saturday from getting tuned at Gear heads. They did a great job. Car made 470.3hp at the wheels and 452 Torque. Felt really fast until Saturday night when I took my buddy for a ride. Shifted from 2nd to 3rd at about 5k, dropped clutch and BOOM! T5 took a shit.... I guess all you guys that said that "when the power comes, the T5 goes" were correct.

So now I'm looking for alternatives. I need something that will hold up to around 600hp because when the engine goes. It's getting built and then pullied. I'm thinking either TKO500, TKO600, or T-56. I was wanting you guys opinions on the pros and cons of each. And any information about modifications that will be needed. I know I will need a new bell and clutch but what about crossmember, flywheel, driveshaft, etc. Any opinion or info you have will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Can't do it. Automatics aren't as fun to me.

Hey Glen, the power's really coming around on your setup! Nice! I don't have a lot to offer on the subject. I'd probably be looking at the TKO-600 or a T-56. I've read a few things about notchy shifting on the TKO, but I haven't researched it much as it was never a real decision for me. Either way, you're probably looking at a good $2k no matter what tranny you decide.

You can install an A5 gear kit into your T5. I have done several of these units and have yet to have one break. I've sold them to customers making 500+ hp with excellent results.

I'll be pulling the trigger on a liberty face-plated tko-600 in the next week. I hope to be making somewhere close to your numbers with a little spray. Its supposed to be great on the track and allow you to shift it at over 7k rpm. I've read where people hate to drive it on the street, others say its not a problem. I don't think its going to be an issue for me since I'm not going to be driving my car daily. I guess it really depends on what you can live with. The guys at liberty said it would take 3-4 weeks to put something together, since all the transmissions are built to customer needs.

Liberty Gear does good work but I would expect it to take twice as long as they estimate it to take.

I have a Liberty TKO 600 and it's great at the track. I'm shifting at 8k plus. It's kind of a pain in the ass on the street but, I hardly drive the car on the street. You might see if Liberty can build you a TKO 600 with faceplating on 3rd gear only. All you have to do, when you are cruising around on the street, is skip 3rd gear and go directly from 2nd to 4th gear.

Yea I figure they stay pretty busy, but I'm not in a rush. They seem like really good people and always helped out with a bunch of questions.

I thought about just faceplating third gear since it would seem to make it nicer to cruise around town. I'd rather not take a chance on missing second or fourth. I've read once you figure out what rpm the transmission likes to be shifted it makes it easier to cruise in town.

i might not have any solid info for ya man but i have a TKO 600 in mine with only 4000 miles on it, i drove it every day while i was home on R&R from afghanistan, to me, i think it is just fine. drove it a LOT into, through, and out of town, traffic and everything, no big issue, shifts are easy, i did notice it takes a tad bit more push and pull since they "click" in and out. but thats what makes it feel solid to me, i like it.

Sounds like a TKO should be in there. Nice numbers!
