  • 2000 Chrome Cobra R Wheel Widening from 9.0 inches to ?

So, rather than return the 295/30/18s that i got for taller, narrower tires, i figure what the hell, might as well call up Wheels America for a quote.

Looks like they can do them for $250/wheel, which isnt too bad a price. I have a spare cobra r wheel, but they said that they prefer to use their own material, and that it wouldnt affect the price.

So my dilemma is how wide do i go?

I have a MM 3 link suspension in the back with regular springs (no coil overs) and an adjustable sway bar AND tailpipes. I dont have a ton of real estate on the inside. I already had to "clearance" the exhaust piping for my 10 inch wide Pro Stars with 275/50/15 Drag Radials However, i do have plenty on the outer side towards the lip, at least 1.75 to 2 inches of clearance to the edge of the hip flare.

How wide should I go? I can go up to 3 inches wider (so 12 inches wider) for the same cost. 10.5? 11? 11.5? I'm not fully sure on where the extra width will effect me.

So it looks like the wheel width will be added to the backside of the wheel. Ugh.

I'm hoping on going with an inch wheel spacer and longer wheel studs with open ended lugs and a 10.5 wide wheel.

I hope a 3 inch long Moroso stud will be long enough for a 1 inch spacer and wheel?

Surely you can find a cobra wheel to your specs for under 250 and not have to use spacers

They only made orignal OEM 18x9.5 Cobra Rs in satin, an original batch of chrome and satin 18x9.5 knockoffs, and then the rest are 18x9 knockoffs. Even finding knockoff 2000 Cobra R wheels in 18x9 is becoming harder and harder to find.

They (wheels america) cut the inner barrel and weld their own proprietary ring between the halves. Because of this, it will only affect the inner diameter. Your options are spacers or new wheels that have 'dish' or have appropriate offset and width. With those Y2Ks I imagine that will be a real pain.

Ever thought of biting the bullet and buying new wheels and selling the Y2Ks? Hell my 18x10/18x9 TSWs were only $950 from a hook up on here...

                Interesting!

I have thought about new wheels, i have always wanted a set of FM5s or FM10s, but the price is just too out there. Even the konig miligrams on the mazdaspeed would look good. Hell, those are 18x8.5!

The rarer the Y2ks get, the more I want to keep them. People got on the bullitt wheel craze pretty quickly so the y2k popularity fell accordingly.

I'll try to do some measurements , but a 1 inch spacer, 10.5 or 11 inch wheel, and 3.5 or 4 inch studs should do it after speaking to Mike at Maximum Motorsports. They run spacers on their AI car with no issues, with wheel stresses on 2.0G turns!

If you already have the tires then buying wheels isn't so painful. It sucks buying new wheels when you have to get tires... I got my TSWs for $950 but also had to tack on $600 for a pair of NT05R drag radials.

On another note, they make some badass billet spacers that go up to 2" or more. They're not cheap but it might be a viable option if widening the Y2Ks is what your heart is set on.

In the first page of my build thread, you can see pics of how Wheels America widened my 95 Cobra R wheels from 9" to 10.5". 315/35-17 Nitto NT05 tire.

Don is right, what ever you add will add to the wheel's backspacing.

I run a .50" spacer with mine to kick the wheel out. Also sitting on 3" ARP studs.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I'm just looking at if i need 3.5 inch wheel studs or if 3 inch wheel studs will do it with a 1 inch spacer.
