  • Anyone have issues with timing a "W" code SOHC 4.6?

    Mechanically timed about 40 in my years of screwing with the mod motor but this one is giving me hell.

    All new timing components and installed new correct size valves, lapped them twice and followed Ford, Alldata 10.53 and other guides but still have no luck.. Getting into a bind on #7.

    Figured bank 2 cam was off 180° but hell no it's not.

    Any tricks or secrets you mod sohc gurus have?

    Need this POS out of my shop today!

    do you have the cam sprockets on the correct sides Left/Right?

      Yes. Even have the marks on the chains matched to timing marks on crank and cams.

      I can get full rotation with bank 2 chain off, then re-turn the cam to be at needed alignment of TDC on #1, reinstall chain and still get a bind.

      Advance bank 2 to about 4 degrees and it turns full by hand without bind, but cannot get it to start when assembled.

      POS truck!

        You are sure the motor is at top dead center when you put the chains on ?

          I believe the lobes on the factory cams are press fit, is it possibly you've had a lobe slip or spin on the shaft?

            Yes sure on TDC.. Not sure about the cam lobes though. After I think about it, the cam could be screwed.. Journal castings were messed up and had to be re tapped for the oil holes.

              Ive had this happen more then once with factory cams.
