  • Cummins gurus, hoses and belts?

So I have an 04 3500 with about 128k miles on it. I am assuming it is all original radiator hoses and t-stat and even the serp belt.

We are about to haul a 28' enclosed trailer and car up to Indiana and back and I am considering doing this work before we go. Apparently the system holds 28 qts of coolant but what is the maintenance interval on these parts for this truck? IT's not about the money, it's mostly about not having a lot of time to get it done between now and then with all the projects I have going at the moment.

What mileage do most folks replace all this stuff?

I'd change the belt, but I ran 325k on my 04 before selling it, never changed the hoses but did shred a belt around 150k

Change the water pump, or carry a spare.

Aside from a few scratches on the exterior, this truck doesn't even look close to 10 years old....except maybe the rear bumper where I backed into a trailer a few weeks ago!

Water pump? Seriously? Hmm, while all this is drained it might make sense to do it now....?

They like to die, apparently. The three teamates of mine that have dodges have all had water pumps die, and at the race track. It's stupid easy to change, and cheap, so yeah, I would before you find a puddle under your truck when it isnt convenient.

I went ahead and did the hoses, belt and pump. Serious pain in the ass because of the damn "clamps" they use on the hoses where a PITA to get to. Ended up having to pull the intake tube and alternator to get to them.

Anyway, cooling system is good to go for another 127k miles! woohoo!

Thanks for the heads up on the water pump. For an extra $47, it was worth the effort to not to have to do it on the side of the road!

Shit, that one needs a "Mandatory if you are going to think about working on cars" button. I have one here at work and at home. With all the retarded positions they have the factory clamps on various cars you have to have something to help you keep your sanity and that tool is it. I have some spring clamp pliers that work for a lot of applications, but that was is a life saver.

Paul showed me that a few months ago, and I immediately thought "where has this been all my life!"

I had 2 Snap-On sizes of that hose clamp remover, both of which were taken when I was robbed I (and my knuckles and forearms) miss them.

I believe my home one came from Sears, a friend picked it up for me for @ $35.

My work one is Matthew, Mayhew, Mayhem, something like that. I gave @115 for it off the tool truck 8-10 years ago probably
