AOD driveshaft question

I have a driveshaft for my boys 88 LX 5.0 with AOD, it has one of those balancer type rubber rings/plates on the trans yoke/input. I heard Ford put those on them because they do not balance them, is this true?

The reason I am asking is the rubber cracks, especially around the ring. Can I remove the rubber disc/ring and have it balanced and be ok or do I need to swap out the yoke for another no factory Ford type unit.

Aluminum driveshafts are so cheap for foxbodys why even mess with stock stuff.
