  • Troubleshooting 93 Chevy K5

Vehicle: 93 Chevrolet K5 (full size blazer)4x4 motor is a 5.7 350 tbi set up

Issue: The truck turns on fine, idles fine but once you put the truck in gear it starts to bogg, misfire, backfire and eventually turns off. I cannot get it past 1st gear without dying so thats why I just cannot run to autozone and have them test it.

Things ive done: Replaced the IAC valve, replaced the throttle position sensor, I changed the fuel filter and cleaned the injectors etc. checked for vaccum leaks etc.

Things I think can help but not sure: Replace EGR valve and MAP sensor, I was also told to replace the Coolant temp sensor. Do you guys have any sugesstions?

The truck has not cats, just a Y pipe looking exhaust to a flo master

Those TBI's are real bad about the fuel pressure regulator going bad. Take it apart and look for holes in it.

I had a 98 GMC that would do similar issues like the rough idle, bogging and dying and it turned out to be a module in the distributor. If you end up changing the module be careful when doing it. I broke a fitting in the intake and it was a complete bitch to change it out. If you mess with that fitting get the metal replacement one.

If the fuel pressure regulator has holes, it should have a visible leak coming from the regulator cup with the aircleaner assembly and spacer removed. Common issues would be low fuel pressure, weak coil or bad coil wire, burnt cap and/or rotor.

The coolant temp sensors generally fail, in my experience, to default full cold -40 degrees. It will run incredibly rich if this happens. The map sensors rarely fail and the only way the egr gives issues is if the valve sticks open. It won't want to idle if this happens but should accelerate and run in the upper rpms.

My truck kind of acts this camaro put sudders more and has more back fire to it. In the comments someone suggested a bad torque converter but I just had my transmission redone and had a brand new converter installed.
