  • Timing question

I rebuilt my '90 5.0 with a timing gear 'noisy' and Anderson n41 camshaft. I did all of the work installed the timing gears dot to dot. Set the initial timing at 12 btc. Been tweaking on it after maybe 100 miles, was messing with the timing and noticed it ran better if I advanced it even further. Check tdc today and the balancer is nearly a quarter of a revolution past where it was initially.

Did the noisy gear slip time? Where did I messup?

how did you check TDC, you are saying the balancer is 90 degrees out? What kind of balancer/damper?

Stock replacement balancer. Removed #1 plug rotated engine clockwise until it quit pushing air. It was still lined up with #1 on dist cap but balancer is now about 90 degrees clockwise of where it was when I initially set timing at 12 btc.

Edit: tdc is about an inch in a half from original 12 btc mark in the advanced direction.

just sounds like the stock shitty balancer is rotating, I got a new one from FRPP and it was junk, sent it back to summit and got a romac. Does your motor run rough, it should be WAY out of balance if the ring is spinning on the hub.

I don't know man. I got the stock original balancer ill throw it on and see what's up. Thank you. That's an easier start than pulling the timing cover.
