  • 351w build questions

Im building a 357 windsor motor for the street strip for my son. how much horsepower will this engine make with GT 40 heads(cast iron) no port work with a hydraulic roller cam. also will have a little bit of nitrous for the track. basicly a pump gas engine.

Gt40 irons are going to be tiny on a 351 Windsor block. Maybe 300 n/a, IMHO

There is no where enough info to guess hp but I can say that those heads will limit a 357. I would say that peak power wouldn't be much more then a 302 with the same parts.
About 10 years ago I did a 306 for a friend and with stock P heads, Stock P intake and a stock Mustang cam it made 306 RWHP and went 12.0 @111 in a 3000 LX with a T5 and a 4;10 gear.
In a mild build like this I would rather have a 302. It will turn up faster and probably run better for less money.

Depends on pistons (compression ratio), cam specs, intake, etc. Carb or Fuel Injected?

Got this off of another site.

I have here some interesting information I obtained in which Westech Performance was able to do the following with GT40P heads and a 351w.

                core:69-73 era 351w 2v junk yard special
                Block:bored 4.030
Pistons:Federal Mogul .030 over forged flattops
                Compression:10.5:1
                Crank:Nodular Iron machined .010 undersize
Connecting Rods: Stock c9OE reconditioned with ARP bolts
                oil pump:Melling high volume
oil Pan: Front sump street pan
cam:Comp Cams extreme energy 262 hydraulic flat tappet
                Lifters:Hydraulic flat tappets
Valvetrain:comp Cams roller rockers(doesn't specify what ratio)
Cylinder Heads:Ford Explorer GT40P heads with 1.94/1.2 valves out of box
Induction:Edelbrock performer RPM with Speed Demon 750 CFM
                ignition:MSD
                Headers:1 5/8 long tube

Dyno numbers(this is on an engine dyno, not chassis)

                RPM HP Torque
                2500 N/a N/A
                3000 206.6 352.5
                3500 247.9 372.0
                4000 295.2 387.6
                4500 337.2 393.6
                5000 373.7 392.5
                5500 395.3 377.5
                6000 398.9 349.2

I understand there are some small differences between my build and the one metioned, but I doubt that I'm missing anything really crucial that would restrict me from getting 300 HP at the wheels with my combo.

I would go with an aluminum head. You are adding weight with a 351 based motor, the aluminum heads will offset that some and make way more power. Even an AFR 165 will work better on there than a set of unported GT40 iron heads.
I would watch for a good deal on a used set of aluminum heads.
These are what I'd be looking for:
AFR 165-185 (bigger if you ever plan to stroke that 351)
                  TFS Twisted Wedges
                  Canfield
                  Victor Jr
E-brock Performer RPM with some work
RHS 205 with good valve train
Even an aluminum GT40Y head would be better.

For intake, if staying EFI, I'd be looking for a minimum of ported GT40, but preferably if Holley Systemax has a lower for the 9.5 deck that is what I'd go with on that motor. If they don't, then the EFI Victor 5.0 or TFS-R/Box intake.

Custom hydraulic roller from Ed Curtis to match the rest of the combo.

Could make closer to 400 rwhp with the right parts, maybe a little more and then add a 200 shot on top for low low 10s if not dipping into the 9s.

Why try to push boost through a straw when you can push it through a garden hose?

My son is only 15. Building it kinda mild. Gt40 heads are here laying around. That's the only reason I'm asking

your 15 year old son doesn't need a turbo then

                            I do tho

I think putting a turbo on those heads with that size of engine would be pissing into the wind, but that's just my opinion.
