  • My 95 Mustang The Sipper

Well trying to build a daily driver mustang that gets 25 mpg Combined Hwy/City & 30+ mpg straight Hwy

Here is my combo so far

    95 Cobra Intake
    1inch Phenolic Spacer
    TFS 170 Heads
    1.6 Stud Rockers
    Stock Cam
    Shorty Headers
    Off Road H-Pipe
    Flows
    Aluminum Pulleys
    Aluminum Driveshaft
    75mm Throttle Body
    Anderson Power Pipe
Pro M 80mm Mass Air Meter
    30lb Injectors
    Stock 3.08 gears
    Power Steering Delete
With this setup, The car feels like a dog down low. When it was stock i dynoed 232 RWHP & 292 RWTQ with just all the bolt ons listed above minus the TrickFlow 170 Heads & 95 Cobra Intake & 75mm Bullet Mass Air meter calabrated for stock 19s instead of 80mm Mass and 30s the car felt decently quick & fun to drive, But now with the addition of the TW 170 Heads & Cobra Intake and going to 30s & 80mm Mass Air with Anderson power pipe. The car feels like a SLUG from a dead stop. Car has plenty of topend & feels stronger up top then what it was when I was stock Heads & Stock intake. But down low its SLOW. Of course my goal with the car is Good gas Mileage & it be fun & make 400 RWHP and still knock down 30 mpg with the S-Trim

    Changing the combo up
Going to Foxbody style Throttle Body setup for better throttle response
    Putting on
    Edelbrock RPM 2 Intake
    New Fuel Filter
    New Cap & Rotor
    Romac Balancer
    New O2 sensors
    Bumping timing to 16 degrees

Im sure once I put the Edelbrock RPM 2 Intake its going to feel slower cause of the bigger runners. But hoping once I install the S-Trim with 6lbs of Boost it will wake the car up

Any tips on getting better mileage? Been thinking about doing Longtubes & installing a MSD 6AL or 7AL to bump the spark in the car. Also going to add Pin On Cowl Hood to save on weight & eventually do K-Member & A Arms to drop more weight & maybe do Corbeau FR1 Racing seats to drop weight

More power and more fuel dump doesn't generally yield more mileage.
Consider a 6M and a gear vendors overdrive rear end.

Also, what are you getting now?

well, in order to get good mpg, you need to have the motor in the "sweet spot" and not lower or higher than where it is efficient.

Ex my 250k mile 86 gt vert got a solid 26 mpg highway with 3.73's. Im sure that the e6 headed tired motor wasnt the best for trying to knock down milage numbers, but it ran so good I didnt want to mess with it.

The bigger heads/intake are going to move the power higher in the RPM range, with a loss of bottom end torque.

          I average right at 21-22 City/hwy Combined & 27 Hwy

I know the throttle response sucks right now & why im switching to the Edelbrock RPM 2 intake when I convert the throttle cable to Foxbody style. I have read converting to Foxbody throttle cable helps a ton for throttle response in SN95 cars. But worried about losing more low TQ by going to the RPM 2 Intake. But hoping with the S-trim will make it shine and complete the combo in low end TQ area from a stop.

Also thought about going up to 3.27s instead of the 3.08s, But at 70-75 mph I run 2000 RPMs on the Hwy with the 3.08s & I like being able to run 70+ on the Hwy. Would the 3.27s help with street driving and hurt me on the Hwy and push me past 2000 RPMs on the Hwy.

Sean what is a gear Vendors overdrive rearend? Car is a budget car as well! Dont have much in this car & want to keep it that way! Also you said 6M! You mean MSD 6M?

Yeah i can't see how adding fuel and boost is going to increase mileage, unless you're constantly out of boost, which defeats the purpose of the blower.

You could build a long-rod 302, and just stay out of it.

Read people actually get better gas mileage with a Blower or Turbo provided they stay out of boost! One guy in MM&FF has a 91 White GT with heads & Cam & S-Trim that claims he gets 30mpg Hwy with his setup. I am keeping stock cam too!

I would run an explorer cam, personally.

Yale going to run this motor till it die's! But once it does give up the ghost, Going to run a 302 block & de stroke it to 289 so I can gain some low end TQ & destroking it should help with mileage as well along with me running lightweight Forged Pistons & Rods with a Polished 289 Crank

that is the opposite of what you want.

What Baron said. You will lose low end torque, destroking it. Also, if you're going to build it with mileage being the goal, remember to put pistons in that will allow you to easily run 87. A bigger concern would be, will you save more in fuel costs than the engine costs you to do this specific rebuild. If yes, you should do it. If no, you should pass.

Just when I do rebuild it provided I have the car that long. I imagine the current motor still has alot of life left in it. Tested 130 on all cylinders!

So best to just run lightweight rotating assembly to help on mileage. But that whole idea is way down the road.

Right now I want to focus on the motor I have in the car and any tips to reach my goals for The Sipper
