  • Car won't start after installing new battery

My wife's 2011 Kia Forte Koup was not starting sometimes, but then would start up later. I took it to the dealership because it's still under warranty, they tested the ignition, alternator and battery. They said the only problem was the battery tested a little low. Since the battery wasn't covered under the warranty, I went and bought one and installed it myself (to save a buck). And it still isn't starting. Anybody know what else might be causing this? The electronics still come on, radio, lights, etc.

I thought Kia had like 100k mile warranty? Is the motor turning over, clicking, or making any sounds when the key is turned?

Yes it has a warranty, but the battery isn't covered, that's what the dealership told me was the problem. the motor isn't turning, but all the light and remote locks work or come on.

I'd check your grounds. Make sure nothing is loose or damaged. Afterwards, connect/reconnect and see what happens.

Might be a dumb question but is it possible that the new battery isn't fully charged? Check the voltage on the battery with a volt meter & see what it reads.

I've seen a whole bunch of people buy new batteries that are bad. IDK why, but I know at least three people that has happened to. It's worth a shot.

It's happened to me three times now. One car, one lawn mower, and one ATV.

Does it make any noise at all when you turn the key (click)? Do lights work or dim when turning key?

The lights come on and that little beep to that starts the fuel pump (I think that's what that sound is), the electronics come on. It engine doesn't crank or try and turn.

Sounds like the security system has an issue. Like the car doesn't fully recognize the key.

Those cars have been recalled for defective battery cables. The negative lead has a voltage sensor that feeds back to the PCM. If it's bad or if you've added any additional wiring to the car it won't charge correctly.

Put it in neutral and try.
