  • which is easier to rebuild?

    So I have an aod in my car and a rebuild kit for it new in the box... I have a t5 at the house as well. The only other part I have for conversion is the clutch pedals. Which tranny is easier to rebuild for a first timer t5 or aod?

    A lil more light on the situation. I have a 306 with gt40 heads, 1.6rr, tfs 1cam, typhoon intake, 255lph pump, 24 lb'ers, and 373's. Aod w/tork master 2000 stall.

    I also have a set of 210 aluminum heads (machined and with upgraded valves and hardware) with crane ultra gold aluminum 1.6's than I want to install later like summer time.

    Never messed with an AOD, but a T5 is not very difficult and is doesn't contain magic.

      Check my tko/3550 (CMC forum) rebuild thread for a similar experience with the t5, I've never done an auto.

          The difficulty is repairing or building any transmission is to know the difference between what is good and what isn't.

            I guess so. I was just looking at just using a rebuild kit and not just parts of it.

              I've done an AOD. Not too bad, but you'll need a puller to get the pump out. Other than that, just lay things out in the order they are pulled, then put the new parts in in reverse order. The hardest part was putting the shift kit in the valve body.

              That being said, I still switched to a 5 speed.

                My point is, the challenge is knowing what is good and what needs to be replaced. There are a lot of times I sell customers parts for their T5 DIY attempt and know for a fact they don't need the parts they are wanting to replace. On the contrary, there are a lot of times I will sell customers parts and know that they aren't buying everything that the typical unit requires to be properly repaired.

                  That's always been my reasoning for taking transmissions to someone who knows what they are doing.

                  I have confidence that I could take one apart and put it back together, but none in the fact that I dont know what these parts are SUPPOSED to look like, to know if they arent good any more.

                    I can't tell you how many times someone has brought me a unit that was recently "fixed" by someone they knew or themselves. You'll see brand new bearings on an input shaft with gear teeth sharp enough to shave with. They are shocked it was still making noise after they replaced the bearings. Well no shit, the bearings weren't the reason it was making noise in the first place.

                    Another good example is, someone will tear down a unit, replace all the bearings and syncro stuff but completely over look a pitted pilot tip on the output shaft.

                      Sounds like it would be easier to overhaul the aod than to do a build and trans swap to five speed. When you go to swapping things it just multiplies the problems.
                      Hit eBay for a used puller. I used a prybar after pulling the lockup solenoid and pump bolts on my 2004r, not sure that would work on an aod.

                        May want to add a disclaimer here about how people buy what they want,even after you do your best to steer them in the correct direction.

                          There are rebuild video's for the AOD also along with a lot of information on the process. There are tons of upgrades available to make the AOD more durable for higher than stock horsepower too. That convertor doesn't seem to be matched well for the rest of your combination.
