  • V8 S10 Project Help

Ok so I picked up this 87 S10 a few months ago. The kid I got it from was driving it daily and said that I could do the same. He was asking 1500 for it but I ended up giving him 800 for it since he didn't tell me about all the rust until I got there. The truck drove great the entire hour and a half drive home.

So the next morning I pop the hood to check the oil (it was late and I couldn't see crap the night before) and I realize that the dip stick is wedged in between the manifold and the block. the dipstick was jammed and there was no way to check the oil at all. I ordered a set of swap headers and a new dip stick tube to fix the problem.

The trans has a big shift kit in it also. I noticed after a few days of driving the shifts were getting weaker and weaker so I went to check the trans fluid to find out that to dipstick is not there either. Im looking now for a new dipstick tube.

So now for what I need help with. The truck diesels when you kill it witch tells me that the timing is off. Someone pulled the thermostate out, Im guessing because until I swapped the radiator out a week ago because it was leaking like crazy.

I need to know how to set a Edelbrock 600 Carb back to factory. I think that whatever dumbass half ass built this truck turned the tune all off and I have a lot of work to do to get this thing running again.

Oh to top it off I realized a few days ago that someone CUT all the back brake hard line out of the truck. Someone had this truck as a drag truck and my guess is someone tried to turn it back into a street truck.

That MF'er is prolly so fast it would be like riding a big giant can of rape named bubba just outta prison set free in a girls college dorm.

I plan to slowly fix it up and see where it ends up.

Not much "adjustment" to the Eddy carbs.

Edelbrock is the most respected name in performance! Since 1938, Edelbrock has manufactured its core products in the USA for quality and performance.

Carbon buildup will cause it to diesel too. You might want to think about seafoaming it before you get to messing with too much.

Air filter is too small, needs more diameter or a lot more height to keep it from being restrictive on the upper end when the secondaries are open. Edelbrock carbs are pretty dang simple. Lightly seat both of the mixture screws and turn out 2.5 turns. Then with the truck warmed up good and at idle adjust each mixture screw until the highest\best idle is achieved, from there readjust your idle screw to the appropriate idle speed. You'll have to know the stock metering rod, metering spring, and jet #'s to make sure it's completely stock. As stated above, carbon can cause dieseling, as well as idle speed being too high, and Ignition timing being off. Check that the vacuum advance it adding timing when vacuum is applied. With the age of the HEI distributors, I find a lot of the diaphragms have deteriorated at this point and won't hold vacuum, make sure the weights are free in the distributor also.

I assume the Lokar Dipstick on the firewall you added for the transmission? Buddy of mine had an extended cab that body style many years ago. It had similar rust issues. He looked for quiet a while trying to find a decent donor/replacement cab.

Did you seafoam the intake tract, or use it in the crankcase. If it was in the crankcase and the engine had a lot of sludge or buildup, the seafoam will dislodge it in a hurry. The end result will likely be a clogged oil pickup screen, oil starvation, and bearing failure.

Ditch the air filter and throw that carb in the garbage.... Neat project but needs a lot of love....

I'm kinda thinking about doing it for my old beater truck today just for shits and grins.

The added humidity in the air should add a little to the show.

No back brakes will have you swapping ends one day when you mash down on em. Was a passenger racing some clown that did that. Thought he was gonna wipe us all out. Get that fixed before you go fast!
