  • Rocker question

All, i have picked up these heads ( Edelbrock Performer RPM ) from a friend, I am looking to put them on my 302 bored over .40. The can that I am using is the B cam, these heads did not come with RR (rockers) and i need to buy a set. Also, i am in process of building the motor, so i have not bought my pistons yet either.

What is a good set of RR to use, also i am need of the head bolts as well.

Arp head bolts or studs if you plan on a power adder although it's not really all that necessary.

I have trick flow rocker arms, they seem to work just fine.

A 1.6 will get the job done but will give 10% less lift then a 1.7, sounds like a lot but it's good for ~5hp.

What kind of piston are you wanting to go with? What's the size of the combustion chamber? Are they 2.02 valves?

    B303 is 224/224 .480/.480 110 with a 1.6 rocker arm. Or .510 with a 1.7.

Fwiw don't be so sold on the b303 as it can leave power on the table compared to other camshaft options. It was great back in 1993 though.

Mike, this is my first ground motor build and i have no plans of adding a charger to this motor. As far as the pistons, i am looking to get 10:1 or greater.
This will be mostly a weekend driven car, so not a daily driver.

As far the CC and valve size, i picking up the heads today and will look at them.
As far as the B cam, i pulled that out of my last car, i dont mind selling it to get something else. What do you recommend as far as the cam goes?

      All info is helpful.

      Thanks, Adrian

Be careful going too much higher than 10:1, you'll start running into detonation issues on pump gas.

What intake do you plan on going with? Really truly I don't think I'll ever buy another off the shelf cam, most people will and can get you a custom grind for around the same costs and will be more suited for your needs. Ed Curtis on corral.net has been the go to guy on camshafts for a while.

10:1 should be easy to handle on 93 octane I would try and stay under 12:1 though.

I have always been told to use a cam with a heavy exhaust bias on ford small blocks. But every set up is different.

I have Brodix heads, similar to yours and a Holley systemax intake with a 218/228 510/510 112 Anderson camshaft. I made 320whp and 315 wtrq with some issues I wasn't aware of at the time. It ran a best of a 7.6 at 90.85 mph n/a.

well i have the cobra intake from my last motor, i was thinking of using that, would that work with these heads? Also, i have my old 65mm throttle body ( bbk). I am going fuel injection if that matters here.

For your set up the b cam will do just fine. I would use it if you're on a budget and see what it does. But there ARE better camshafts out there. The cobra intake will be a slight restriction to those heads, but it's not bad. It'll keep a lot of torque but it'll be hard pressed to make 300whp. An Eldelbrock rpm2 or performer intake would be a good choice.

I have a performer intake Forsale just saying....if your going to keep it all motor on pump 93 keep it around 10.1. The rpm heads should have 2.02 1.60 valves so flycut pistons are a must. Probe pistons are a really good choice. If it were me I would sell the b cam and atleast buy a anderson cam or spend the money and have one made for what you have. It will work a lot better that way. Are you keeping the stock crank and rods???

Mike & Junk thank you for this information.

Thanks for the info on the pistons, i been looking at the probe's already.
As far as the B cam, when i dropped off the blocked to get bored cleaned etc...

i told them i was using the B cam, so they didnt do any grinding.
What other cam could i use with out having to worry about grinding work?

I had planned on using the stock crank, and rods as well.

Camshaft grinding doesn't have to do with block machining. It means to have a custom cam made just for you.

Mike thanks for clearing that up.

If i go withthe B cam or a custom cam, do i need new rods?
