  • Briggs & Strat guys, carb tech question

I have a small, 1400watt Craftsman generator that I picked up cheap, but the carb started leaking fuel. Someone has been in it and there is RTV slathered all over the gaskets and carb.

it looks similar to this one:

I had a guy take a look at it, and he was originally thinking it needed a carb kit, but brought it back saying it needed a carb. Ive done some searching, and found a new carb on Amazon for ~$65,

Is there anything Im forgetting? Anyplace to pick up the carb other than amazon? I'd like to get it running, either to keep around in case I need it or sell it.

Make sure you are using the model type serial numbers to get the right #carb.
Did they drop it, or just get rough when slathering rtv on? Broken parts?

couldn't tell you to be honest. They put it on the gaskets, one of the holes has it in there, etc. It actually ran pretty well when I first picked it up, but it would leak fuel after it warmed up.

those pulse-jet carbs don't hold any fuel to speak of, under the side plate with the screws is a spring and rubber that is the fuel pump. If it leaks, it won't run. Where the carb bolts to the tank there is a gasket and it may be all you need if the gasket attaching it to the engine is good. Inside the fuel tank there is a pocket the shorter piece on the bottom of the carb pulls gas from by vacuum, the small pocket inside the tank can rust out if it has had water in the tank but it won't leak outside the tank. the longer tube has a filter screen on the bottom of it, the pump on the carb fills the small pocket inside the tank.

Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.
