  • Power steering / hydroboost question

I have power steering, & braking via hydroboost, on my Bronco. I changed out my power steering box (for one with no leaks), and I cant get my power steering to come back, and as a result, my brakes are gone (HB). Getting this new box was a painful, expensive lesson, dealing with some guy off CL out of Garland.

I don't think it's air in the line, but it could be. I've tride getting the front wheels up & cranking the wheel lock to lock to get any air out of the system, but I'm not getting anywhere.

If I wanted to check the pump to make sure it's working, what's the best way to do so? Disconnect a low pressure return line (there's one on the hydroboost and one coming from the PS box)?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm not real familiar(ok no idea) with how the ford is setup. I did do the hydroboost swap on my Buick.

Is the reservoir built in with the pump? I think I'd look into how the pressure is routed and how the return is and pull the return and see if anything comes out when the engine is started. Do it briefly as I don't think there is much and it could run dry in a hurry. With the cap off and engine running is there any movement in the reservoir? Is the pump "whining"?

When I did mine I jacked the front up, started the engine, and went lock to lock three or four times shut it down added fluid and did it again several times to get the system burped and full. Also might actuate the brake pedal several times to get any air out and through that part.

Turned out the pump was not putting out enough pressure. I disconnected the high pressure line at the box (line runs from pump to hydroboost, then down to the box), put it in an empty bottle, and started the engine. It started filling fluid, but not as fast as I would expect something high pressure would. I expected to create a mess in short order. When I didn't, I suspected the pressure was low.

Fortunately, the pump I was using was a lifetime guarantee from O Reilly, so I returned it, put the new one on, and now I'm back on the road.
