  • Is there an easy way to identify the gearset in a Powerglide without pulling it apart

    I think it is time to identify the mystery gearset in the factory Jeep Powerglide I am currently running. Yup, this 'glide was factory equipment in my 1970 Kaiser Jeep DJ5. It was factory mated to the GM 153 four cylinder Nova engine.

    Now, I know there were odd versions of the glide that were used with four bangers that were air cooled and had open windows in the bellhousing to cycle air. Mine isn't like those. It is either the 6 cylinder version with the weaker 1.82 gerset, or the V8 version 1.76 gearset.

    What is the easiest way to identify if it is a l6 trans or v8 trans, without having to actually go into it? Any way of identifying them by the numbers and symbols all over the case? It has held up well considering it has been behind a 250hp+ v8 and powershift into first at around 60 mph a fer times for passing someone, and have even been towing a small boat with it.

    Kinda drunk and getting long winded... Is there an easy way to identify the gear set in a powerglide without tearing it apart?

      Early 1962 Powerglides had a serial number on the RH front corner of the case. Late 1962 to 1973 Powerglides had their serial number on the RH side of the transmission oil pan.

      The first two characters were the transmission type:
      1.76:1 ratio had a YH in the S/N
      1.82:1 ratio had a TB in the S/N

      The third character is the build location:
      A = Clevland Ohio Torque Drive
      C = Clevland Ohio Powerglide
      E = Mckinon, Ind Powerglide
      T = Toledo, OH Powerglide

      Fourth charcter is year of manufacture:
      EX 2 = 1962

      Fifth character is month of manufacture:
      A = January, B = February, C = March, D = April, E = May, H = June, K = July, M = August, P = September, R = October, S = November, and T = December

      Sixth and seventh are the day of the month.
      EX: 01 would be the first day

      Eighth character is the shift.
      D = Day
      N = Night

      That is all I know.....

            Well poop, found the number stamped on the pan.. "C0H02B"... appears to be just the date code with no prefix to indicate what low gear cluster is in it. I guess I'll just assume it is a light duty 1.82 cluster for now.

            From what I have seen, it has never been opened up or rebuilt, the Jeep was a dispatch vehicle at an air force base for 15 years and then sold to a local machine shop where it was a parts-chaser for another 10. It was parked in 1995 due to a starter bolt broken off in the block and then sold for scrap in 2008, that is when it ended up with me.

            The transmission is still holding up except it is starting to take a bit longer to shift into high gear at full throttle, and it seems the torque converter is loosening up some in the stall speed, seems to be up near 2800-3000 now when power-braked where it was around 2400-ish back in July.
