  • Rearend Noise Help Needed

Rear end knocks in gear and under load (when giving it gas) The faster i go the faster the knock is and also get slightly louder with speed. It's gotten a bit louder over the past year. Most likely needs a new pinion bearing/crush sleeve and to have dialed in correctly...maybe some other stuff idk. I know there are probably some pretty knowledgable rearend/ differential people on here I could possibly take it to (I'm on a tight budget). If someone could point me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance - James

Also it's an 86 T-top Foxbody with a 1998 Gt 8.8 rearend. Carrier was rebuilt with new clutches and 3.73 gears etc etc about 4 years ago.

Sometimes worn U joints will make the same noise. Might want to have a look at those first. Who knows you might luck out and get off cheap....

        Good luck.

LCR will make a knock too if the front bolt gets loose, but not like your describing.

if i supplied the parts, what do you think your labor would be?? i have 3.73's now and wouldnt mind switching to 3.55's. probably would just need gears and a master bearing rebuild kit?

That would be nice if that was the case...I actually have that on my list to do too. My ujoints are worn, but just barely, but I already have replacements and plan on taking my aluminum driveshaft to have them put on and balanced in the next week or 2

If you're on a budget, find one that is still good and buy it. It'll set you back 100-200 depending on the seller. And you can find those sn95 rear ends all the time.

if it were mine, the first thing i would do is drop the driveshaft and see if the pinion has slack in it since it's leaking at the seal. If it has slack, either the pinion bearing is shot or someone didn't get the crush sleeve tightened down enough to keep the bearings loaded. the pinion should take a little force to make it turn, like 18 inlbs or so to make even move, not turn the axles or hubs , just the pinion. If it's looser than that I would use a impact to tighten it up till it has the correct preload, the seal may even quit leaking if it has slack now. Some may tell you it's crazy, but, that's what I would do if it were mine.
