  • Thinking of buying a silverado. Questions.

Which year is the "year" to have? I'd like a nnbs but they're out of my price range.

I want a single cab. Are the 5speed transmissions any good? I know they offer a 4.8 with the 5speed but not the 5.3. Can you take a v6 5speed and swap in a 4.8/5.3?

Would an automatic be a better choice?

It will be my daily and maybe occasionally pull or have a small load.

Single cab short bed? Tlc isn't a problem but if it's a turd then f that.

5.3 auto seems to be the way to go.

A gmc or Chevy would do.

What's the cheapest one can score a nnbs with the 5.3 6speed scsb?

99 was the first year of the body style and didn't have stepper motors in the instrument cluster. One less thing to worry about

I have a 2006 crew cab 2wd 4.8 auto. After replacing the trans @ 6k miles I've never had another issue. I'm at 86k now.

My 06 crew cab has probably 190k miles on it. It's cammed, stalled, full exhaust, lowered, tuned, the works. Only thing I've done is a couple of wheel hubs because of the 22" wheels and a steering rack. You can't kill the 5.3's and the trans lasts good if you use a good cooler.

My 2000 4x4 is about to hit 230k. I'd drive it anywhere. 5.3 auto.

I also got 20mpg on a road trip not too long ago. Not too shabby for a 4wd gasser

Wife drives a 04 5.3 Tahoe & its pretty quick for what it is & my work truck is a 2004 4.8 & its ok. It needs more power though. But I do work the shit out of it. I pulled 4 trailer loads on my 16ft trailer of 4 yards of 1inch rock. Shit weighed about 8000lbs.
