What's that sound? Always a fun game!

This odd whine seems to be getting louder. At first I thought it was only present when I was slowing down but the more I pay attention to it sounds like it's there all the time.

Any ideas's? Gears, Diff, I dunno??

In the 1st vid from 3-10 seconds you can hear the whine I'm speaking of, it increases when I speed up & decreases when I slow down.

Maybe a wheel bearing? I'm not familiar with what sounds they make when going bad?

Definitely not a wheel bearing. Sounds more like transmission whine in a manual, or power steering whine.

Didn't think about the power steering, I'll have to check tht out.

Over the past few months I've had 3.73's, new differential, clutch & flywheel installed.

A whining noise that's tied to the speed of the car could be coming from the rearend. My '00 SS was making similar noise, had Texas Drivetrain Performance rebuild the rearend w/ new bearing and seals, and reset the ring and pinion, and that took care of it.

Lightweight flywheel?
Sprung or unsprung clutch?

I hear it. Sounds like the transmission to me.

I have heard that before and it be an issue and not be an issue. Some transmissions (gears really is what it is) are prone to being loud/noisy. I don't have a mustang so I don't know if that is normal, but I do know people tend to be more sensative to sounds after they have had work done on their vehicle. If you know someone else with the same year range mustang see if you can hear it in theirs, if not take it to a good rear end shop or transmission shop and have them take a listen.

Does it stop or modulate at all when you push in the clutch? If not I'd be more inclined to believe that the it's the gears or diff wearing in.

I'd also suggest moving the camera down lower, and make a pass with it near the behind the rear wheel, and another with it behind the front wheel. It will be louder in the back if it's the diff or gears, and louder up front if it's the tranny. Hell, you could zip tie it to the rear axle for a low speed run, you don't need video.

with the tranny in 4th it should go away if it's the tranny. 4th is straight through, no gears involved

Ok, I did a video of the front and barely heard the noise. This is a vid of the rear, definitely coming from somewhere back there.

Time to rebuild that Rear end.

Remove the differential cover inspect the oil coming out look for large chunks of metal and shavings had the same sound on my car.
