  • How to decide on which valve spring

Who can tell me or what can I read that will tell me how to properLy determine which valve spring is best suited.

I have had people tell me use this because they're good. But not tell why.

    Help!

    Thanks!

This I have always gone off the cam makers recommendations.

Crane Beehives are the best all around valve springs...

run the lightest spring you can (ls1 beehive?) and i'd run a tad more pressure than recommended, i think i've already suggested the psi ls1511ml before, it's a GREAT spring if it works for what you need.
absolute highest quality wire and treating, very light, good spring pressure

Ok. Anderson suggested their hi rev springs for all Anderson cams. And to me that sounds a little rediculous because they have mild to wild grinds.

Yes you told me to use them, and I've been looking into it.

What all do I need? I've installed springs but it was more of a r&r on stock Springs.

I was also told to not be a parts installer but a builder and have each spring tested for accuracy.

You can take the springs to a machine shop and have them check the pressures at open and seat height. The AFM springs get pretty crazy on pressures, they are also heavy so they need more pressure to compensate for it, if you have a AFM cam you may just want to go with what they recommend, it's going to be hard to figure out the best pressure w/o testing, IE install the beehives and dyno the car, look for any signs of loss of spring control. That could get expensive if they don't work out.

Ok, my current springs are a 1.9 IH, I think the PAC springs were 1.8 does that mean I need .1 in of shim to bring compress the spring more? Or am I idiot?

I feel like I'm making it more complicated then it is.

yep, spring locator is usually .060 so you are almost there, if the pac spring has enough seat pressure that you could lower the IH and still have enough then you could go w/o the shims.

I see. It makes sense now.

At what point would I overcome the lifters with spring pressure? Does that vary with oil pressure, or is there a difference in what type/brand of lifter?

I'm still using the original lifters.

I use these, last for a really long time with my cam, less that .600 lift

I like the quality control they advertise. You ever double check them?

AFM says running those spring pressures is ok with stock lifters but it makes me a bit worried, they definitely have a lot of experience with it though, they seem to be the kings of running a shitload of spring and RPM with a hyd roller.
