  • Drum brake help

i picked up a 90 mustang roller with a ford 9 inch. it has drum brakes but they are empty, nothing inside, just the housings. does anyone know of a kit that they make to make them work again? dont know if it matters but the pattern is 5x4.5 and the 4 bolts that go on the backing plate are 3 1/4 inces apart? any help is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to get most of what you need at your local auto parts store - two sets of brake shoes, two spring/hardware kits, two adjusters, and two wheel cylinders. You need to find a source for the bolts for the wheel cylinders, and you'll need to find a source for the parking brake related parts (the arms that connect to the parking brake cable, and the push bar that goes between the brake shoes).

You may also need the parts that stick out of the wheel cylinders and push on the brake shoes if it was so equipped. Some shoes are designed so that these parts are not required.

Thanks alot. When you say "source" you mean maybe a donor drum brake? To get the right size for the drum size do you measure from outside to outside or the inner ring? What about the depth? Outside to outside?

If I were in your shoes, I'd determine which axle flange you have and head to the JY, Craigslist, Ford forums, etc and find complete drum brake assemblies and just swap them out. Then you will know what you need parts for.

Just about any V8 ford from the late 50's into the 80's used 8 and 9 inch housings.

Another source is find someone who has done a disc brake conversion and get their old parts. Better yet, do the disc conversion yourself. Lots of donors, Mustang, Crown Vic, Explorer, Cadillac, etc.
