  • Rear Gearing Question

New to the forum and would appreciate any insight / experience y'all have on my issue.

Just started racing 1/8 mile at Northstar with my 2009 GTCS with a NX plate kit currently spraying 100. I am running on MT ET Streets 295/55/R15 which are about 2 inches taller than the factory rubber. Made about 15 passes so far best being 8.0027 @ 90 mph. 1.90 60 foot.

Here's the prob. No matter what I do the car bogs on the launch. I have even tried launching as high as 5,000 RPM. My friends even said I should change my license plate to "BORN2BOG".

After some detective work, I found that the rear gears are 3:31, not the optional 3:55. I think the gears are too tall for what I want to do, which is launch hard. I don't care about fuel mileage (the car is already too loud on the highway with the cat deletes and the Pypes mufflers). All the car is used for is the track, and some local driving. It is just a toy.

I was thinking about going to 4:10 gears. That being said, how can I find out what the optimal gear ratio would be for this car? It is a factory 5 speed with light mods and I will be jetting up to 150 this Saturday at Northstar.

Appreciate any advice y'all have. And if you are at the track on Sat, stop by and say hello. Blue GTCS with dark star rims and NX decals.

Did you buy those Dark Stars from a guy in Keller? If so, that would be me.

4.10's wouldn't be a bad choice for a 3V, especially for 1/8th mile racing. The 28" tall tires will make them act more like 3.73's, so it should be a good compromise.

Still have her. Put her back in the shop for a new tune on Saturday, and a few other goodies. Hopefully have her back in a week or so and can get to the track.

410's would help, 430's would get you moving, 4.56's will have a very short 1st gear, so that might come into play.

Put a shorter tire on it!

Too funny GB, that's exactly what two friends said and I will be testing 26" on Saturday. Though I did come to the forums with the expectation of gaining support for the gear change, which of course was my idea.

                Appreciate the reply.

I like 4:10-4:30's in mod motor cars.

Tire swap would be a cheap way to kill some gear. In the end drag cars work better with taller tires and more gear. Go with 4:10 if its a semi daily/street toy. Go with 4.30/4.56 for strip only car. IMO

Driver mod that sounds pretty slow for your mods.

                              4.10's with a 28" tire works well.
