  • Metal shaving in oil: 2010 Taurus SHO

So I decided to change the oil to full synthetic in the SHO today, although the dealer changed it about 1k ago. To my surprise, the picture below is what I found. Some of the pieces are sort of flat, some of the metal are long twisted pieces. Light almost aluminum in color, some have this color and brass/gold appearance. Thoughts? Car has 50,750 on it

    What the hell??

    Upon further inspection..

I kept the old oil in which there are a ton more. The filter was also kept. Opinions on where to start or am I crazy? The car is a CPO.

Looks like you got some pickers in that pan.

I don't know much about that engine, but I see that when timing chains start eating through their guides.

Well after starting the engine up after changing the oil, I heard a bit of chatter. And now that I think about it, I do hear chattering sometimes on start ups and very very lightly when accelerating. Not sure if it has to dowith this but it may.

you can send a sample of your oil in and get an analyses on the damage that way.

Again, screams timing chain to me. It's been an issue with the ford motors for a while now, but I haven't heard of it happening on the 3.5L.

Yeah, the car is CPO, I also bought the MPP Platinum warranty up to 125k to cover all the stuff not covered by CPO.

Drop it off and tell them it's broken, so fix it or replace it. You paid for that for a reason, and it wasn't just to feel good.

Purchased at Grapevine Ford. Stationed at Fort Carson. Ford dealer up here should honor CPO?

Only issue I'm going to have is getting a rental. I'm 20 and I don't think they will give a rental to me. I need a vehicle for work. Its pretty much mandatory, especially for how long the car is going to be down.

See if the dealership where you are can do something for a loaner.
