  • Greasing the starter

I need to grease the starter on my 351 (boat). How do I clean it, what kind of grease do I put on it, where do I apply it?

    Thanks in advance.

    Why does it need grease?

I have never heard of doing this. You typically want to keep oils out of the starter. Have you had a rear main go out? Eventually the starter starts dragging from all of the build up.

Why do you feel you need to grease the starter?

It us on his boat. I would assume packing grease in certain areas would prevent corrosuon from water exposure?

Greasing the starter is listed in the maintenance schedule in the owners manual

The only place you would grease would be the bendix area, and the first time you crank the engine over it will fly off. My boss still greases the bendix of every starter he installs, his logic is that it will help when it meshes with the flywheel, I just call bullshit and install them dry.

Bullshit. I've never had the bendix or engine fly off after greasing it.
