    2001 Ford Ranger 4-cyl w/ manual transmission
    150k miles

Starting yesterday it has been very hard to shift into all gears.

When I make a shift I get a metallic chattering sound for about 1 second and then it drives normally until I have to shift again.

It doesn't do this on every shift, it's about 50/50.

Hydraulic clutch feels normal and seems to be working normally.

DOT3 fluid at the firewall is a smidge low when cool, but I haven't checked while hot.

I'm pretty sure the tranny fluid has never been changed.

    Any ideas? Am I hosed?

        OK, update...

Took it to a local place to just verify the tranny fluid was full\no leaks.

They then of course give me an estimate for a total clutch\tranny rebuild at 2 grand... LMAO

Anyway, now that I've gotten it back from them, the issue is MUCH worse and the only time it will go into gear is when the car is off.

Is there anything easy "they" could have done to make it like this all of a sudden?

        I'm not putting 2 grand into a 2001 4 banger Ranger....

Any grinding when trying to get it into gear?

Not really... If I really try to force it, I'm sure I can make it grind though... but overall, no grinding...

Maybe a broken fork, clutch not disengaging like it should to allow you to shift.
              Air in the line?

Looks like I am pretty much hosed. Can anyone recommend a tranny shop near Hurst/nrh?

                  Those aren't like t5s.

They feel like the hit a stop before they start to grind. If you push harder it will grind. I'm not for sure how/why they're like that. But it sounds like a slave cylinder to me.

Manual Transmissions just don't shit out without some kind of notice.

Does it feel like you're clutch isn't disengaging?

Put it in gear, get rolling. Push the clutch and stop. What happened?

The chattering sound could be the throwout bearing saying its last words.

could be a master or slave. could also be a collapsed pressure plate

yep. they probably tried bleeding it and got air in it or the seal in the slave finally gave out sucking in nothing but air.

put it in gear engine off, no e-brake on a hill. slowly push in clutch pedal. if it starts rolling you know it is disengaging. If it never rolls....well, put a throwout bearing and slave cylinder in it and drive away. While you are there, put a $150 clutch kit in it.
