I have a bad leak and think its a seal In the tranny. What kind of $$$ would I be looking at having to spend to replace a seal?

Which seal? Rear seal is obviously a lot easier than a front seal.

I see the fluid coming out of a gasket at the bottom of the tranny. I believe thats really an inspection gasket. and from what I have googled, that means its either a bad front seal or some type of pump seal.

It's probably just the o-ring on the plastic plug for the VSS sensor hole. A new O ring will cost you about $.15 and 5 minutes to replace, if that's the culprit. Had that happen on two of my 99&up Fords. It can leak a lot of oil around the pan.

The transmission fluid is coming out the bottom though. Out of the black gasket at the bottom of the bellhousing. Would the VSS O ring do that? It's not running down the side.

Nope. It's the front seal on the transmission, which makes it much more difficult.

i dropped it off at the tranny shop and it is the front seal. They want 1600-1700 to fix. Looks like its time to start shopping.

Thanks for the contacts guys. I just don't know if its worth dropping that much coin on it. Its already at 276k. There is no telling what else is going to happen at this point. I already had to replace the intake manifold earlier this year.

You know that you can get a used transmission for $300-$400 right? Not the easiest job in the world, but it's not horrible either.
