  • Should the Water Pump Free Wheel?

My buddy is having some overheating issues with his 95 GT. It runs on the "O" for a long time, then climbs to the A or L on occasion, then right back to O. He has a new thermostat, new Radiator, and new fan motor. it does this on the hwy and in traffic so I think the fanis ruled out. He pulled off the belt and spun the wp with his finger. He said it free wheels 3-4 turns before stopping. I just checked my Lightning and it's tight. Not even 1 full revolution. He heard a loud screech from the wp when he repaced the radiator and was waiting for the thermostat to open. I'm thinking the impellar is spinning on the shaft and not flowing properly. Should it just free wheel spin like that? Shouldn't the water in the housing offer resistance?

I would say yes. But why not replace it anyway since he's overhauling the cooling system? They are like $20.

No so much the water as the bearing pre-load should offer resistance. Start it up and watch the radiator filler, if you dont see water moving then the water pump impeller probably isn't turning.

He said hes running without a thermostat now and it runs on "O" 95% of the time then occasionally going down the road it will creep up to the "A" or "L" then slowly fall. Without a thermostat there would be no air pockets and no restrictions. Hmmmm. I'm gonna pull it off tonight.
