Why no love for them? Looking at an 05 with 150k miles. Most of the 3/4 tons I am seeing are the 6.0. Learn me on why to avoid them.

Good motors once you spend money fixing some factory fuck ups. Get about 15-16 average and roughly 19-20 on the highway going 70.
First and foremost buy a good gauge setup. I have the edge CS with the EGT add on.
If it doesn't have blown head gaskets:
EGR Delete
most likely will need new oil cooler
put the new "blue spring" in the fuel regulator
6.4 fuel banjo
turbo back exhaust
If it does have blown head gaskets add all of the above plus:
new oem gaskets
machine the heads flat
arp studs
Injectors have a problem with stictation. Normally rev-x will patch them up for another year or two when they start. After that you will need new injectors. Warren Diesel sells rebuilds/upgrades 155cc for $600.
Do not use can tunes on them. Get sct tunes from innovative, gear heads, looney tunes, etc. Add an FICM tune from Power Hungry Performance on top of the sct tune.
The aftermarket has really taken off on the 6.0 this past year. People have figured out how to make them reliable and make good power."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. I've had my 07 since 08, and ive had no problems. Egr delete and Bullet Proof Diesel ficm and oil cooler.
And i would find one that already has head studs.
And what FatherFord said. I run Innovative tunes and MBRP 4" turbo back. Change your fuel filters regularly too.Last edited by DieselSmoke; 07-25-2013, 10:51 AM.You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

My 03 has 200k miles on it and still rocking the factory TTY with no blown gaskets.
I'm also running an atlas 40 ficm tune with an Gearhead SRL for factory head bolts."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"

The 03's were a disaster. They have their problems, but once addressed are a fantastic engine. I put over 190k on mine, pulling nearly 90% of the time. I blew the head gaskets early on, around 25k miles (2006) and had ARP studs installed. Had issues with the egr until I had it bypassed.
I wouldn't hesitate to own another one. I was getting around 18mpg empty (f350 srw 4x4 cc, truck weighed 9200lbs). Loaded the fuel mileage tanked pretty hard.

Had my 06 for a little over 2 years now, and I love it. I still have TTY head bolts, and the heads have never been off.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the coolant. The factory ford stuff is part of the reason the EGR coolers had issues. The fix is to flush it completely, and replace it with a coolant like Cat ELC-1. A coolant filter is a good idea, too. This and the blue spring is all I've done to mine so far, and it runs great. Next for me is the Atlas 40 programming in the FICM. Its rumored that this program nets a little MPG.
As long as you know the weaknesses, and the fixes, I'd say go for it. The trucks themselves are great, mine doesn't have a squeak or a rattle to speak of.

I would get an SCT ECM tune before the FICM tune.
I have all the following done to my 03 and it runs damn good, except for the injector that is acting up.. I got some 155's on order and should be here in 2-3 weeks.
I also learned that some good batteries make a world of difference. My truck came with some walmart MAXX 700cca batteries. When I put the diehard platinum in the truck just flat out ran better.
MTW 03 turbo billet wheel
PHP FICM Atlas 40
GearHead SRL
Strokers Unlimited Coated Up-pipes
3.5" dowpipe/4" exhaust
AFE Stage 2 Pro Dry CAI
6.4 Banjo
Blue Spring
EGR Delete
Edge CS
Coolant by-pass filter
Oil by-pass filter

How do you like your tune? There's good reports on just about everyones tunes, kinda hard deciding who to use. I don't want to race, looking for MPG's and monitoring gauges more than anything. The tunes would just be a bonus!

What I like about gear head is he is out of college station... So if I ever wanted to get some "live tunes" it's just an hour drive for me."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The 13blade is actually a better wheel.
The big thing guys are doing now is what is called "durastroke." Use an 04.5 and up exhaust housing and center section, and put on a duramax cold side. Bumps it up to a 63.5mm wheel from the 58mm wheel that comes stock.
Mad turbo werks sells it, with an even further upgraded single stage billet wheel for $750 with a factory core. It's the only way to go if you have to replace your turbo. Spools faster then stock and a lot more air.
The popular "powermax" does the same thing, but still uses the 10 blade wheel, which requires extensive tuning."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. Ive seen some egt issues with the durastroke, powermax works awesome IF you put injectors with it, otherwise....ehRing and pinion specialist
