  • E-fan help!

I have hd some wiring issues with my electric fan today. First the constant 12v for the relay broke. Got that wired back up and then the ground came loose for the relay on the way home. Those are the only two wires I touched.

Dual efan with relay and 195 thermostat controller. 12v ignition comes from the wiper motor harness.

The problem now is, when it is wired up, the efan runs all of the time, including when the key is off. If i remove the ground wire the fan stops, however, the wiper circuit stays hot when the key is off. I pulled the relay thinking a pole inside was stuck, no luck, still had the same issue, could it be the thermostat?

It's still running after its cooled down? Or is the motor still hot?

      Ecu temperature was at ~180.

I would almost be fine with it running all of the time. Problem is it doesn't shut off with the ignition, it continues to run. I am also getting a constant 12v crossing over into the wiper harness. It should only be hot with the ignition. I am thinking the switch in the temp sensor for the fan is stuck open

Well now I might have been crazy, the issue with the wipers is gone, but now the fan is constant on. And when I pull the relay, the fan shuts off

I can't seem to locate a temp sensor by itself (the type that pushes into the fins), so I guess I will just pick up a new controller and rewire the whole thing.

Maybe you are back feeding power to your trigger wire?

Ive heard of those sensors failing. Probably what it is.

That is the problem. Though now I don't have the constant power to the wiper assembly. The only place left is the temp sensor and I can't find one of those damn things to save my life!

I had one do something similar, anytime the fan would come on it would also turn the a/c lead hot and actuate the clutch on the compressor. One diode fixed it.

Im not sure exactly what your set up is, was doing, and is doing. It was working fine, until you broke the trigger wire, and the ground came loose?

                    Correct.

The ignition power source comes from the wiper motor. Yesterday the constant power wire broke loose causing it to run all of the time. Fixed that and all was fine. It was a quick fix until I could get it home and wired properly. I guess there was tension on the ground wire and it pulled free on the drive home. When I tracked it down, I re-wired the ground and then this issue started. It may have arced on something without me knowing it when I went to cycle the key or something. There is a diode or something on the constant power wire (black cylinder) I can't make out any of the numbers on it though.

After the ground was wired back in, I was getting power to the wiper motor with the key off, as well as the fan running constantly. Not sure how, but now the wiper motor functions like it should (no power when key is off) but the fan runs constantly.

I have power on both sides of the "diode" (I wish I hadn't forgotten all of my electronics studies).

I also tried a different ground location.

So, since it got dark before I figured it all out, I put a switch in place and I am running ghetto. Crank truck, pop hood and flip switch, park, pop hood kill switch, turn truck off, repeat...

The 12V cross over came back this morning. I made a run around the sub division I am working in and didn't turn the fan on. Temp showed 210 on the guage. When I killed the truck, the wipers were still going. I have eliminated the relay as an issue, I tried a new one and had the same issue. So the problem is with the thermostat or wiring. Does anyone know where I can pick up a new "push in" type thermostat? Also, where is the best source for wiring and loom? I might as well re-wire and clean it up while I am at it

Do you have a socket that the relay goes in or spade connectors on there?

It plugs into a socket. I THINK it was a dorman fan kit, could have been a derale, not sure

I asked because it sounded almost like a crossed hot somewhere, but with a socket that would be harder to do.

Yeah, that ws my original thought. There are two wires that go into that terminal, though I can't remember where both of them go, one goes to or comes from the thermostat
