  • harmonic damper

So I've had a relatively small vibration and weird idle since I installed the new motor set-up, which I already know dynoed low as fuck and is slow as fuck, so save it.

Anyway, the damper is a Summit SUM-C4271 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-c4271/overview/ and was installed new with the motor a couple months ago.
Here is what it looks like new:

I took some pics today. It doesn't look right to me but I have a hard time believing it's already failed in such a short amount of time. What do you guys think?

    Thoughts?

looks like elastomer failure, sucks I was just giving the summit damper props in my CMC thread.
Is there a mark on it to show the outer vs inner alignment? If not, mark it, then fire it up and see if it moves.

I was afraid of that. I don't recall seeing a mark for inner vs outer, but I'll make it tonight and check it when I get to work. Thanks for the suggestion.

I marked it up last night and drove it to work this morning, about 35 miles, and it didn't rotate at all.

Do you remember if there were balancing holes drilled in the outer ring when you installed it? You may have to beat on the car a bit to get it to rotate if it's really rotating, turn on the a/c, headlights, max out your pulley drag, then free rev or downshift aggressively. Either way the rubber looks a bit fubared from the pics, not sure if summit will do anything about that, if it's rotating then you definitely have issues.

No holes other than what you see from the front. I'll run the ac and everything on the way home tonight, shouldn't be a problem.

Summit only carries a 90 day warranty on this piece and it sat in a box for 2 months waiting for the motor to be done, I doubt they'll do anything. I bought it from a 3rd party anyway (new in the box).

Well, gave it hell on the way home, marks are still unchanged. I ordered a different damper anyway. Something just doesn't feel right about this one.
