  • Hydraulic Clutch problem(?)

My 155K mile 2001 Ranger has a soft clutch pedal that catches right at the bottom of the pedal stroke. I noticed it some last summer, but it went away when it cooled off. Now that it's hot- same problem.

No visible leaks and the clutch master cylinder is full- I've never had to add fluid. Clutch grabs pretty well & no slippage. What's up?

Replace the fluid, if its got a soft pedal and otherwise all is well that's where I'd start.

If you're still having a problem with that then I'd replace the master and slave.

Flush is a good place to start but the master cylinder i most likely worn bypassing (the fluid is thinner when it is hot) I have witnessed it before and have flushed a brake master cylinder that was suspect and the pedal went dead after that. My guess is the full stroke (past the worn spot in travel) to the floor while bleeding finished off the piston seal. It would be a good idea to replace the slave at the same time as they are know for leaking.
