  • Any ideas on fixing wheel hop on an S10?

Hey guys, I got a 98 GMC Sonoma in and it's been lowered. The guy just removed a leaf from the springs to drop the rear. Problem is that now upon acceleration, I am getting axle wrap and severe wheel hop. I want to fix this as quickly and cheaply as fucking possible, but I've never had to deal with this before. First thing on my hit list is checking the shocks, they look original, so that could be a factor. Any other things to look at/make to stop this crap?

Thanks for the suggestion, but $340 isn't an option. Besides, it's a 2.2L turd, I just need to stop the wheel hop from happening under normal driving conditions. I get the idea of how it works though, I might be able to fabricate something for a bit cheaper.

I would if I had it, but I'm not the one that lowered it. I suppose that I could hit up a pick n pull.

less pressure on your right foot.

Shocks will help - a bunch.

Leaf spring wheel hop is caused by the axle trying to rotate and the leaf spring being unable to control that energy. The spring wraps up into an 'S' shape until the energy stored in it overcomes the energy from the axle rotation and it springs back flat - causing the wheel to bounce.

If it's been lowered, I'm guessing it has lowering blocks. Those are bad for wheel hop because they increase the leverage the axle has. Also, removing the leaf weakened the spring.

My suggestion would be to find some old school '70s slapper bars and put them on it. They are just pieces of steel that are connected to the axle and limit how much it is able to rotate before the slapper bar contacts the chassis. Hell, you could make your own.

Here is a good explanation of what they are and why they work.

For a lowered leaf spring truck, those are by far the best option aside from putting it back to stock.

How much is it lowered? Did he use blocks too? Is this generally under normal acceleration from a stop?

It's probably more driveline bind from the change in pinion angle due to being lowered than actual axle wrap.

AutoZone sells 2 degree shims for about 6 bucks. Place them between the axle and spring. They keep them on the shelf with the lift blocks and U bolts.

Look for an anti-hop shock on ebay. It will probably be listed as a hop shock. There is a rear end bracket, frame bracket, and shock. It will help but in all honesty as an owner of a rcsb 2.2l 5 spd......you shouldn't need it. If you dont plan to address the spring issue, new shocks are a must. If they pulled a leaf, it changed the distance between shock mounts and you should look into drop shocks.

Or if you want to keep it lowered and not pay the premium for drop shocks, replace the leaf springs, get a set of $30 blocks to lower it and replace the shocks. The KYB gas adjust's that I put on the rear of my truck have been great for the price so far

                      Stop dumping the clutch

Mine was 4/5 drop and would only wheel hop if I dumped the clutch.

The ZQ8 trucks have a factory hop shock you might be able to find.

I'm not dogging on it at all, this is happening under normal acceleration. Probably doesn't help matters that it has short assed gears in the back. I am guessing 4.10's minimum, maybe fo fi sixes, I am turning 3K rpm at 65mph in 5th gear. I will check it out today, the shims are sounding like the cheapest option here.

If you are getting wheel hop under those conditions you have an underlying issue.

As for the gears, if it is an automatic they should be 4.10s 5 speed they are 3.73's. I show ~3200 rpm at 80-85mph. I have stock suspension and wheels and tires. When I had a lowered 2002 same driveline I got a little wheel hop but nothing extensive, and only when I would dump the clutch.

Hmmm mine only did on a clutch drop from a stop. I believe you have other issues. Try shocks, at least that's a 30 minute job.
