Get a 7.3l diesel only. My father bought his in '04 for 8k, and we have never had any issues with it. A tuner helped the power and gas milage out and I swapped in the 6.0l tow-package transmission cooler (roughly 4-5x bigger). That'll hopefully make the transmission life longer (along with the firmer shifts from the tuner).

It was purchased with 80k and it now has 160k. Tuner, straight pipe, CAI, and routine maintenance will make it last forever and pull good.

Well if I was towing regularly a diesel would make sense as they cost a good deal more from my research.

It would only pull weekend family hauler and road trip duty. Plus be cool to have a beast like that at my disposal when I want.

The diesel is worth it due to twice the mpg, holding its value, and being much more reliable. I haven't heard too many good things about the v10.

Not to overtly call bullshit, but bullshit. What is your mileage/gallons per fuel up? 7.3's aren't know for their mileage. My 95 7.3, which was fairly light by HD truck standards got around 17mpg empty on the highway. My 00 got 15, although the comp read 19+. So you should have been seeing 900+/- miles per tank.

Just went looked at the one my wife saw. Nice. Really clean in and out. Great tires. Harley front seats. Not stock but are really nice seats. Didn't see a spot of oil underneath the engine or trans.

264000 miles tho. What's it worth. 2000 model Asking 5400

If you get a 7.3 change out the fuel bowl O-rings for the drain valve. My gas mileage was fairly decent since buying it but I always thought it should be better. I had always smelled a little raw diesel but never seen a drop under it. This winter it started the drip underneath but went away as it warmed up. I could still smell it though. Finally got off my lazy ass and changed the freaking two dollar O-rings. It was wet in the valley but not dripping underneath. I guess it had been leaking all along while driving but not enough to drip afterward or while parked. I picked up about forty to fifty miles per tank.

If you have a CAI and handheld programmer there are some gains to be had on fuel mileage.

My brother bought an 02' 2WD 7.3 brand new....he'll tell anyone hands-down the best thing he's ever bought for his family. They've traveled that thing all over the country, currently has ~230k on it and still super reliable...they just got back from a trip to New York a couple weeks ago. It was bone stock until 100k....then I did exhaust, Air Raid CAI, and a Bully Dog & gauges for him. with the mods it has gotten as good as 21mpg hand calc, but normally averages around 18mpg on their trips.

He had to do the tranny at 150K and I also put a water pump in it, an alternator, as well as a few injectors when it was right around that 200K mark.

Of the various brands, I've owned 10 diesels, so my response would be, no shit.

But some mileage is all you'll get. 23mpg towing a car/trailer is bullshit. Especially on the 7.3, it isn't an efficient motor. Better that the v10 by leaps, but not 100% better in the fuel economy. It still takes a certain amount of fuel to operate and the excursion isn't exactly a lightweight. Throw a trailer and car on there and you'll pretty easily exceed 15,000lbs.
