what exactly about motorcraft makes them better than one or the other? I was told a few years ago that Fram makes motorcraft filters, but I have no proof that is correct.

Motorcraft doesn't use cardboard in the end cap, for starters.

The WIX (aka Napa Gold), Motorcraft, and AC Delco are all I would use. If you have an import car I would stick with WIX or the OEM.

Never get a Fram and put it on a car you care about, unless you're using it to mask the oil filter boss on a block you're painting. Every comparison shows them to be put together with cheap cardboard ends that can collapse and block oil passages. They typically use ~2/3 of the filter media as compared to quality filters and the bypass valves are crap. This is a subject I'm weird about (there are many) and I can't stand to see one of those bright orange pieces of shit on a friend's car.

I cut open about 6 different brands that fit my truck and decided anything other than Fram was okay. I usually use either Wix/Napa gold or Mobile 1/K&N.

Can we get a break down on brand in accordance with the pictures?

Did the mesh separate and enter the engine? They say the adhesive is good for *600. I know oil doesn't get that hot, but stuff around the filter may, I was thinking it could heat soak and fail.
Hottest a filter can get is the temperature of the oil. It ain't generating heat...
