  • 4.3l header/exhaust advice

Needing some advice on my 94 s10 blazer. 4door, 2wd, auto

The only headers I've been able to find are Hedman, Hooker, and JBA...everything esle seems to be for v8 swaps.

For those who've bothered with 4.3 headers, what brand(s) did you use? Were you happy with the results?

I plan on doing duals if possible with some sort of nice sounding mufflers, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I fully understand that it's just a 4.3l v6, so my performance expectations aren't very high, I just would like to open up the exhaust, pick up a couple hp, and get it sounding like I want it to.

All advice and bullshitting is appreciated.

I would advise a nice merge collector and keeping a single muffler, I think with true dials you'll be pretty raspy sounding. On my regal I run long tubes, x pipe, and a pair of turbo mufflers over the axle with tailpipes exiting behind the tire at the base of the rear fender wells. It's got a pretty raspy buzz on acceleration. When i had stock manifolds, crossover pipe and a single muffler it always had a pretty mellow deep tone to it.

Can the right header/cat(s)/muffler/pipe diameter combo get rid of the rasp you are refering to?

it's more about the exhaust pulses I believe. Muffler style and pipe diameter will affect it for sure. The smaller the pipe, the more poppy and raspy it will be, but larger diameter pipe will reduce low end torque. I'm sure one of the exhaust guys can chime in and give better insight than me.

I believe OrangeChevyII on here is one of the resident exhaust men.

Headers on these motors are a waste of time unless you're making some serious power. Upgrade the size of the Y pipe to about a 2" to 2-1/4" and run a 2-1/2" to 3" single back.

On my Blazer I will be doing 2-1/4" Y and 3" cat back with a Spintech.

Are these cpi 4.3s worth a shit? Would better plugs, wires, coil, cai, all that crap be worth doing, or should I just leave it alone and pray it doesn't take a shit on me?

i have a 94 as well, the best plan of action is to keep the ignition in good working order. And the cpi set up sucks too, not the most reliable set up.

Aside from the fuel pressure regulator leaking (it's in the manifold as part of the injector assembly) and causing it to run rich, and the egr valve sticking open causing idle issues, they really were pretty dependable setups. As far as squeezing extra power out of it, doubt there will be a whole lot to be had without extensive labor and cost involved.

Decently modded 4.3l Vortechs with ported heads, 270 cam and marine intake normally make around low 200's to the wheels....

As for mods, keep it simple and apparently the only ignition parts worth a shit are AC Delco. Check out www.s10forum.com for all the knowledge (or lack of depending) you could ever want. But use the search button, they get pissy.

a guy I went to school with did 3" from the merge with some sort of chambered mffler, and a dump. It sounded great.

Would it be worth it to swap the heads, intake, ignition and computer to a '96 and up components?

Cheaper/easier to throw a V8 in it at that point!

Maybe, but is it really practical to put a V8 in a 4 door 2wd s10 blazer? I don't want to drag race the thing, I really just want better throttle response (really wish I could do the throttle blade mod on this thing), a better sounding, more pronounced exhaust note, and maybe a few extra ponies, but thats it.
