  • Mercedes problems

Ok guys, if any of you have experience on these cars, I could use some help. I have an 06 C230 with 128k miles on the 2.5 V6. About 10k miles ago, it started missing and the check engine light came on. Showed misfires on 2 cylinders and an exhaust cam over retarded. Figured I'd change the plugs and check on the cam situation. Pulled the old plugs and 2 had the ground strap bent over touching the electrode. Went ahead and installed the new plugs and it ran perfect for a few weeks. It went to missing again and when I pulled the new plugs, some of them had the electrode bent. I just re-gapped them and ordered a set of coils. Replaced the coils and it ran good for a while. Now its missing again, but instead of cylinder misfire codes, it's giving me circuit faults for each coil. I'm thinking something in the harness or maybe computer. Any thoughts?

Has the exhuast cam code went away since relacing plugs?

I'm not familiar with Mercedes but Lexus has oil control valves that will stick and cause similar issues. If you can get it to misfire, tap on the oil control valve for the exhaust side cam and see if the issue goes away.

Start there. You never go full retard.

Look at the ground straps on the plugs that were bent. See if you can see any signs of anything hitting them. If the plug is closing the gap you need to find out why.

We scoped the cylinders, could not see anything hitting anywhere. One of my buddies that used to work for Mercedes thought that the coils were staying firing and overheating the strap causing it to bend, but I can't find anything to cause a problem with the coils. I checked the grounds for the coil harness but haven't had a chance to chase the whole harness. Found that the exhaust cam being retarded is caused by a magnet being messed up in the actuator. Mercedes has a new design and they are easy to change. From what I have read online, that solves the cam timing problem.

Sorry Buzzo, Ive been in Vegas for the last 4 days. Every single time I see a bent electrode it automatically means the bushings for the intake tumble flaps came apart and got eaten by the intake. 90% of the time you will have a broken linkage when this happens due to binding. Check the front of the intake and look at all the linkages. Chances are you need an intake manifold at about $1,100. do you remember your cam timing codes? The early 272 engines had serious balance shaft sprocket issues. 1200 and 1208 codes usually mean balance shaft replacement which is very serious as far as labor is concerned. if not then its just the magnet.

It wasn't the 1200 or 1208, that's the timing is constantly jumping, this was just over retarded on that one cam on bank 1. I'll have to check the intake when I get home.

Ok red89, I don't see any broken linkages, but the passenger side looks bent to me, but I'm not sure if its supposed to be that way. I worked the linkage by hand and it doesn't seem to be binding anywhere. I can send you a pic of the linkage if you send me a number or email.

Well after reading more about the intake problems, I bet that's it red89. It threw the idle too lean code this last time too. I guess air leaking by where the rod is broken.

To be 100% sure its the intake spray the front around the linkages with brake clean or B12 while its running to see if the idle changes indicating a vacuum leak.

Will do, found new ones online for $695, how hard is it to change? Doesn't look that bad.

Its pretty easy if you have any mechanical ability. The one part that is a huge pain in the ass is getting the gaskets to stay put, best thing to do is make some studs buy cutting the heads off 4 bolts. Then just remove the studs and insert bolts.
