  • 66 Build

Gearing up for my '66 project. Love what I see for some other 66's on the board.

Engine could be 427 sb or 5.4 depending on what it takes to stuff one in.

Anybody know of a 66 with a 5.4? Just curious.

My 66 has a 351W and it's a snug fit to say the least. Not a chance in hell of stuffing a 5.4 mod motor in there without losing the towers. Good luck on your build.

This. It has been doon, IIRC there are kits to delete the shock/strut towers so thatvthere is enough room in the engine bay

It a costly upgrade, no doubt. Not worth the expense imo. A nice little 302 based stroker would be more than sufficient.

There is a reason you don't see many "real hot" '64-66 Mustangs. The front end is a poor design, with shock towers that intrude on the space you need for big engines and exhaust. All of the sheetmetal under the hood is structural yet flimsy, and prone to rust. The steering parts are bulky too, yet the front fender openings are too small for large wheels. The rear wheel houses are tiny so you can't put big wheels and tires on them either.

If you know from the outset that you're going to cut out all that crap and start over with quality aftermarket chassis parts, then the sky is the limit. If you plan to basically keep the stock steering and suspension geometry, look at what Shelby did with the GT350s and recreate that as best you can - and stick with a 289/302 based engine.

IMHO, that's a pretty good target...

Won't have stock steering. I've seen a kit in the NPD catalog I like for the entire front end. I want good handling.
