An old timer once told me that oil was cheap. If your butt hole starts to pucker at 5000 miles, then change the oil and filter. A lot of service rituals are really to make the driver feel comfortable. I have seen people go 20,000 miles and then go to Wally World and put in the cheapest crap they have. The cars still seem to do OK, but I would not feel good about going around the block.

I did my first oil change right at 5000 miles. I switched to Mobil 1 and picked up 1.5 MPG's on the average. I will probably do the change every 7500 miles now with the Synthetic. We are probably safe to 10k miles especially if you do all highway driving but frequent changes are cheap insurance. I think the main thing on these motors is checking the oil...I have seem some reports of small amounts of oil loss that normally wouldn't matter on 3-5k oil changes but on a 10k interval it can add up.
These new motors run much cleaner and usually have larger oil pans (8 qts vs. 5 qts in the older V8's). Add that to better quality Synthetic oils and naturally the oil should last longer. Doing a change every 3k is throwing money away on a newer engine (unless you really abuse it).

I don't have a problem changing when the computer says too. I had about 55K I think on my '10 GT, changed oil when the computer said it was X% oil life left, same on my BMW, never had any issues with either.
At 7700 miles on the 13, %29 oil life left, but I'll probably change it this weekend.
