  • Coyote 5.0 oil change interval.

I'll say right off the bat this is a stupid thread, but what the hell. I've owned half a dozen modular motors through the years, non pi, pi, 3v, old 4v, and have got quite used to the 5k oil changes. I'm approaching 5k, and decided to crack the owners manual for my 2013 GT and the Ford Recommend Service Interval for oil changes is 10k. Now they recommend this. Just tell me I'm living in the future and am not a crazy person for going 10k miles between oil changes.

<- going to be stuck in the 90's forever.

I dont know that I would go that long on a gas motor, despite the manual's spec.

BMW calls for 8 or 10k, but the oil sludges in the head if you dont do them more often. It happens well after the warranty is up.

I know the EPA is trying to get manufacturers to extend oil change intervals, and it probably makes sense in most cases. The coyote holds eight quarts and if you use synthetic it should be able to go further than those old engines without any issue. But it is a pretty expensive engine to replace (ahem) and I wouldn't wait 10k miles myself. I've been doing them at 5-6k.

Yeah, I knew it holds a barrel of oil. I suppose I'll stretch it out over 5k, but I don't know about 10k. I plan on keeping this thing longer than any other car I've owned, so I want to take good care of it. Being raised with 3k as the norm, it's a bit of an adjustment. Surely they've endurance tested these motors to come up with a long term figure of 10k.

When I bought my 12 gt they told me 7,500.
When I bought my 13 F150 with 5.0 they said 10,000 or when the CPU says it needs to be changed... I only have like 3,500 miles on it now and not sure I will wait till the light comes on or 10k. Probably 7-8k at the most...

I'd trust the synthetic oils to go that far, but I don't like the filter hanging around that long.

I'm thinking I'll meet in the middle and go 7500. Hell, if I wait until 10 I might be at a year of owning the car any way.

Unrelated side note: If any of you guys are having problems with your Sync system, I just unplugged the battery and let it sit for awhile and it reset itself after it locked up on me and wouldn't work. They need to make this feature much more user friendly.

Yes, especially that small ass FL500 they use now, of course the more oil the less it will get dirty.
When I bought my 5.0, I changed the oil at 5k miles myself. I had a free oil change at Ford so I went in at 10k miles.
At 15k miles I went to full synthetic and I change the filter at 5k and do full change at 10k miles. This is how I do mine and save a little coin.

One thing that baffles me is if you get the Ford racing kit which includes a Tuner, mufflers (axle back) and oil filter, you get a FL-820. I would much rather get that fliter since its bigger, but Im not sure if this will hurt if you don't have the tuner.

Totally unrelated, but i run mobil 1 and wix oil filters on my ls1 with 211k on it, and so did the original owner before me. The filters on these are small and with a 6qt oil capacity im uncomfortable going over 5k. I usually change mine at 3-4k. Probably overkill, but the car still runs like a top.

Yep. Don't forget all the dust and dirt flying around from all the construction in the metroplex. Eric, IMO you'll be fine at 7500 intervals.

I used Wix and Mobil 1 on my first engine and it almost cost me the warranty. Ford gave the dealership some grief over it, but relented since the failure was not due to an oiling problem. I suggest these guys only use the Motorcraft filters on the coyote even though I think the Wix is marginally better.

Wix makes a great product, but the Motorcraft filters are comparable. I've run nothing but Motorcraft oil and oil filters on all my modular motors and haven't had any problems yet, so I'll stick with them. The Motorcraft 5-20 is a synthetic blend.

If you guys want to see how your oil is doing at certain intervals, send in a sample for analysis and cut open your filter. You'll be able to tell how things are going when you get the results back.

i go 8-10K on my, and my wife's, DD. i do use an OE filter and Mobil 1 full syn though. i think i have gone as much as 12K or so on a single oil change.

yup. i use blackstone labs and send off at every other oil change. it is mostly unnecessary and a waste of $20-25 for most people but i'm constantly tuning and tinkering and i'm looking for any signs of abnormal wear/damage and engine health. (non mustang)

if you do decide to get a sample and you are doing it for extended oil change interval reasons, pay the additional $10 to have the total base number (TBN) tested. they will typically respond with a message of how much life you have left. just do it once after your car has gotten some miles and you will have a good understanding of how your car wears down then oil.
