  • Looking in to a 5.4 swap

    Ok i had a nitrous backfire about 3 weeks ago now. Did a good deal of damage the more i pulled off the more i found messe up..

    so i found a buddy with a 02 5.4 sohc for $600 wondering if i can use my cams i have in my 4.6 and about how much power can a 5.4 hold down.

    And also what will i need to complete the swap


    98sohc281 w/an 03 motor swap with hitech stage 2 cams,jlt intake,c and l upper, longtube headers,o/r x-pipe with No cats dumped ,4:10 gears and a 3k stall w/a lil spray

    It will hold about the same as a 4.6 but you DO not want to spin it many rpms, 6k tops!! The rods are so long in those motors I have seen may of them come through the side of the block.

        your cams will work i think everything will work. i have never done a 5.4 swap. done a 4.6 4v swap on my 02 gt. that swap will be worth it for sure. make more torque down low. if you go with long tubes you will have to get 5.4 swap long tubes.

          Not sure what kind of budget you are on, but a set of rods and pistons along with your topend would make for a pretty nice setup. With that you can go 6500 ish without issue. Couple years ago I built and installed a 5.4 dohc from a navigator. Used Manley rods and pistons along with the factory forged crank, had the heads freshened, stock cams, teeny manifolds, 99+ cobra intake, custom built cai, termy tb and stock maf with 42# injectors. It made 350/425 to the tires through a 3650 trans. Thing was a monster!!

            yeah that would be nice!
            im just trying to figure out if i just put in the work on this o'l 4.6
            or go for a swap.. to be honest im tired of the set up looking for somthing that will just hold more power then my pi 4.6 at a resonable cost

            just looked at a 97 mark 8 swap on Clist.....idk

                A nice 5.4 short block under your top end would be a fun street car! Coupled with the spray it would be a monster at the track !!

                    Just build the 4.6L, I actually have a great shape stock 4.6 shortblock with about 60k miles on it, you can still see the cross hatching beautifully in each cylinder. A built 4.6 with some spray is no joke!

                    I talked to you a little about my setup Friday, I looked at doing the 5.4 on mine when I ultimately decided on the MMR750. I didn't like how wide the 5.4 was, so headers are a pita, you need to widen your mid pipe, also, you have to get the 4.6 to 5.4 adapter plates if your running the 4.6 intake mani, which seriously fuck up the flow, and it *may* be too tall to fit under your hood.

                          I agree with blackpony. for 600 bucks. you will like the 5.4 way better than the 4.6. I would do the swap if it was my car. no replacement for displacement! even with a stock in the 5.4 with your cams. i think you will be able to walk on the average 4.6 dohc. you will have to change a lot more up with a dohc swap, then will with a 5.4 swap. going from 4.6 sohc to 5.4 sohc not much to change if anything. that would be the 600 you have ever put into your car.

                            You can get an easy 300rwhp out of a c-head 4.6l, and have plenty more on tap if you want to throw cash at it.

                              This is what I was saving up to do was a mmr rotating assembly but then my car motor gave up on me.... Damn quiters
