  • Trans guys, C4 question.......

    Ok, I have a big bell C4 w/ a 164 tooth flexlate. I have a 351w and long tubes. It's a total pain in the ass to pull the tranny or move the headers if anything needs to be done down there with the motor in the car.

    My question is -

    I'm looking at a JW bell housing which would need a 157 tooth flywheel.

    This bell housing is smaller and would alleviate the above issues, but the maker of my torque converter (TCS- the convertor shop) says that the depth of the TC is different and that I would need to replace or have my TC modified.

    The person selling it says he has used it on C-4's with small and big bell housings in the past and only need to change the flex plate. This guy has been drag racing for a while and I don't really doubt what he says, however TCS is saying the TC wont work.

    Has anyone done this before ? Pull a small bell on a big bell C4 ? What did you have to do to make it work ?

    When my c-4 is working, I have to use a different converter. I sometimes put my c-4 behind my bbf with a small bellhousing

      don't mix a c5 and a c4 parts, the c5 had a lockup converter and it's bell is for sure deeper, so deep the pump notches won't make it to the pump. The only way to know for sure is to try it. There are so many different combos you can make up with c-4's it's very confusing.

            Here's the deal when you order a converter for a C4 they always ask you "case fill or pan fill" reason being is the majority of "Pan Fills" are 164 tooth and use a thicker converter because the bell housing is deeper that a case fill trans. This is why I told you to call your converter company.

            Now if you really want that bitch to go fast and not have to worry about taking the trans in and out put a damn Glide in it and be done with it.

              Say man.....I'm still pretty sure my shit would be slower with a glide.

              TCS says the can modify my converter to work for around 350 plus shipping back and forth. So around 450-500. I'm out. I'll have you build another tranny before I do that.

                You could also look at it this way. Take the 450-500 along with the $???.?? you where going to pay for the 157 bell. Add that to what you could get for your fine C4 and bad ass converter. And you have a pretty sizable down payment on a Glide program.

                    I went faster with a baby 302.
                    another guy with a 408sbf,he went faster, he was so mad he hadn't swapped to a glide earlier.
                    But oh we'll the proof was in my pudding and a few others I know of.
                    But those "other" guys are chevy guys they are fast anyways. Lol
