Chevy SUV prices....splain me something!

so I am out in Amarillo this week for business and they were out of full size cars and they gave me a 2011 Suburban 4x4 with the 5.3 V8 and the LT package. Decent ordinary truck with leather seats but nothing especially fancy given the seats aren't heated and the dash looks identical to a buddies 2010 stripper Chevy 1/2 ton truck. I actually liked driving it given I put over 550 miles on it in 3 days. So I go look up prices on it thinking, "I'd pay $32,000 for this truck given it's a 4x4 and has great space. $56k fucking dollars...Tahoes START at 43,000?! Seems someone at chevy is trying to pay off the national debt or something?

We paid $29,999 for a Loaded 1/2 ton Dodge Laramie with everything except NAV, Ram Box and the kitchen sink. This Suburban is 2 trim levels below the RAM and felt cheap in comparison...not to mention seriously underpowered with the 330hp 5.3.

Do these things lose 40% of their value the first year or am I missing the Sunday paper deals where you can get one for $28k...? I'd love to have the 6.2L as we drove a Denali last year before we bought the RAM but the stickers for those broach $60k... and for some reason the dealers say you can only get the 6.2L in a Denali or 3/4 ton...?

I sort of like the idea of a full size SUV right now (Feelings of being a Dad I guess), but fuck all that noise of stupid prices. I'll buy an 89 Burban' and an 06 Vette for the prices they are asking!

Post if you found better deals somewhere and a dealer that knows the chevy truck order sheet.

Those prices do seem pretty outrageous. I know that Stonebriar was doing all Chevy trucks for $500 over invoice just before New Years, but not sure if that includes SUVs. My friend bought a fully loaded brand new 2500 HD diesel 4x4 for $50k, which is about $10k under what the sticker said.

It always killed me that the Tahoes are $12k+ higher than Silverados. Just a little more sheetmetal, a couple more windows and maybe a 3rd row seat = $12k more.

If you want an Escalade you get a chrome instrument bezel, a flashy logo on the steering wheel, some chrome wheels, a bigger V-8 (that costs exactly the same to produce) and they are $25k more than a Tahoe.

I have been playing with the idea of getting an older 4x4 Suburban. 96 - 99 with 150k miles or less are running between $3k - $5k depending on trim level and condition. 2000 - 2001 (last body style) seem to be about $4k - $8k.. You can even find Z71's in that price range, clean and loaded with slightly higher miles. Buying a new GM SUV or truck is gonna lose a ton of value fast.

They have gotten outrageous. I bought an '04 Tahoe base model back when it was new. It stickered back then for $36k and I got mine for $24,500. Got it in Oct that year...so good sales. Gas is now back at $3 gallon...supposedly going to $4 or more. If you hold out until gas gets at $3.50 or better, you'll probably see some monster deals on new ones, or even used ones a year or two old that people can't afford to drive anymore.

Whats also messed up was that you could get a brand new V8 Dodge Regular cab or Chevy in like 2008 for 9999.00, and extended cab Dodge for 12500. When the hell did extended cab and regualar cabs jump up to 17K and 20K. Its total BS and I refuse to buy one new until the prices get better. Like said above when gas hits 5 bucks again we will see how god damn proud they are of their trucks.

We paid 3x,xxx for our 04 tahoe z71. They take a major hit to begin with and a new body design didn't help. I sold it for $9900 last summer.

I wouldn't buy one new. Like Chili said, look older and you'll save money plus have something you can flip at a moments notice.

I really like the '07+ Chevy SUV's, but after renting a Tahoe with the 5.3, I realized that I really wanted the 6.2L. And that is only offered in the Denali and Escalade, so I went shopping.

I wanted a black, short body 2wd Escalade with factory 22's. Price...$80, 375. Got approved for zero % and with my G35 trade-in and $10k down, my payments would have been over $700/month for 6yrs. Fuck all that. And discounts/rebates are hard to come by.

I decided to keep my G35 instead. I put on a set of wheels, got a nice stereo and let Nick lay his hands on the paint...all for about 3 months payments. I'll probably pick up an '08 here in a couple of more years, but for now I'm happy enough with my G35 and no payment.

I really, really like the air conditioned seats in the Caddy though, and for a while you could only get them in the 'lade and some Lexus's. I think Ford's got them it in a bunch of vehicles now though, so it's nothing all that special. For a black car in the TX heat though, they're awful nice to have!

I have a friend that got a white Tahoe LTZ and I gotta say that it's an awful nice truck. He's got some nice subtle 22's on it and a programmer/exhaust, and it sounds a lot like the 6.2L (which sounds great stock, IMO). Just doesn't run like one. The 6.2L's struggle to reach double-digit gas milage around town, which really sucks too.

So yeah, I agree, the pricing is nuts on Chevy SUV's. Before I dropped $80k on an Escalade, I'd have to take a serious look at an M5, Z06, Rover, etc...

The New Touareg VW i am looking at, has a price that is hard to swallow...50K+

Thats not even all tricked out.., then again though i'm looking at the Diesel model which has a higher premium...
My last vehicle Purchase was a STEAL, infact i should have bought 2... 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee.. I bought it in 2009 but it only had 223 miles on it.. Sticker for 41k back in 2007, bought it in 2009 for 20k. it had a fuel issue recall and it took forever for them to fix the 1500 SuV's it affected...

Basically it was brand new, never owned by a person, runs fantastic, gets mid to upper 20's for Mpg... I'm happy. Had it tuned and the little 3.0 turbo diesel laid down 450ft lbs wtrq on the dyno.....

Now if they would only put a simliar engine in a 1/2 ton truck.... or better yet an American SUV... I know Jeep is american, but the heart of my Grand Cherokee is all Benz.

good to know about the 6.2L's drinking the gas.

Our 2010 Ram sips gas and hauls ass for a 5000 lb truck. The last two days I was driving the burban around town more instead of cruising highways and it was a total dog. couldn't get out of it's own way really. I did like the size and ride/feel of the large truck....but I don't see one in my future.

I started thinking about the last generation of Burban's with the mid V8 and then just putting a blower on it...but there's that $5/gallon gas thing again.

Our 2010 Ram has been averaging 17 city and 21 hwy. My 2008 with the 3.92's and my heavy right foot pretty much sees 15-16 city and 19-20 hwy. I just need to get past the 3 year old car itch and put money into the race car. If street gas goes to $5/gallon, the $8.50/gal for 104 won't seem so bad! LOL!

It seems to me that starting a few years ago when the car manufacturers started promoting the 0% financing through their own finance companies, that they also started slowly raising the MSRP so that they still made the same amount off of the vehicles. Now that the 0% is gone the high prices remain.

Needs to be 20k before I go back onto a dealer lot. Though, it will also kill used big SUV prices as well...so maybe I would consider used but if someone couldn't afford the gas, they probably couldn't afford to care for the vehicle either...hence why I prefer to buy new.
