  • Starter sticking for 2 seconds after relocation...

Ok, so I did some troubleshooting and figured something out, but I'm still stumped.

Relocated the battery, and I have an SN95 starter...

BEFORE: Power wire for starter was on the battery side of the solenoid, and signal wire was on the opposite side.

NOW: Power wire AND signal wire are on the non-battery side of the solenoid (so I didn't have the 1/0 wire running the length of the car hot at all times.)

So the car starts fine, but the starter hangs for about 2 seconds. Tonight, I moved the starter power wire over to the battery side of the solenoid and it no longer hangs, but I don't really want that wire hot the entire time.

Any idea why its hanging when I have the power wire and signal wire on the non-batt side of the solenoid?

I know we ran into this on my buddies 93 lighting, bit it was several years ago and I just can't remember the reasoning behind the trouble but seems like we fixed it similar to yours.

Why does it worry you to have power to the starter all the time?

Are you talking about the signal wire to the actual starter solenoid?

No, alternator goes straight to the battery.

You run a constant hot to the big terminal then the small wire from your solenoid to the small terminal on the starter. There is not way around it.

I hooked mine up similar to this one time. You can't have the trigger wire getting hot off of the wire that powers the starter motor. It makes the solenoid hang and will drag for a few seconds every time you start it.

So then is it better to leave the power wire on the battery side (hot at all times) and power the signal wire with the solenoid? Or leave the signal wire hot at all times, and power the big wire with the solenoid?
