Feels like I'm asking permission to cheat, but anyone know a good boat forum?

I *may* have just found the culprit to the bogging down/dieing under load. When I went to start it today (at home, plugged up to the hose), I could hear something that wasn't right. It was spinning over, but taking way too long & not catching at all. I pulled the flame arrestor off & saw fuel pouring out of the vent tube (in a boat, it's shaped like a "J" to pour anything right back in to the carb. Every revolution would actuate the fuel pump, and a fresh squirt would come right through the vent, puddling substantial amounts over the plates.
After pulling the needle & seat out to ensure that there was not trash in it (I rebuilt this carb a week ago), I pulled the top off to look at the floats themselves. The secondary float was 100% full of fuel. I have to wonder if it didn't always have some amount in it since I've been running it (2 weeks?)...
I ordered a pair of new floats for $40, hopefully it purs like it ought to.Last edited by barronj; 04-13-2013, 05:56 PM.Ronald Reagan:"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. are you really in Austin?
I have lots of those here in Midlothian if you need a couple to try till the new ones come in. I bought a box of holley single inlet bowls with floats at the swap meet.Attached FilesLast edited by jyro; 04-14-2013, 07:03 AM.Don't worry about what you can't change.

I'd like to give a shout out to Advance Auto, for being the only one of the big 3 who could get the float asap. I ordered it Saturday afternoon (1:45), and they had it here (Austin) from Temple by 7:30 this morning (Sunday). I picked it up, dropped it in the carb, drained the oil (pan & filter) as it was absolutely full of gas, refilled it, buttoned it up, and it runs like it's supposed to. I'll take it out this morning & do the last bit of fine tuning Jyro suggested.
I'll get a new carb for it at some point, next house I sell I guess, because this one has had a hard life. When I pulled it apart the first time, several screws came out with the aluminum attached to the threads, and I saw where red locktite had been used on a few. Surprisingly, this is the only aspect of the boat that looks even remotely abused. I replaced all of the bolts with stainless screws that were slightly longer for that last needed bite.Last edited by barronj; 04-14-2013, 10:08 AM.Ronald Reagan:"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. lol
Ran near flawless today. Cold starts still require a lot of gas, but the primary issue, dieing at idle in Forward or Reverse is completely cleared up. Cruising in no-wake zones, docking, loading on the trailer are problem free.
Rebuilding the carb helped me find that the o-rings on the needle/seat in the secondary had corroded to the point of clogging up the secondary jets. More recently, the full float exacerbated the rich condition that was causing the stumble, forcing the repair that ultimately led to a smooth running boat.Ronald Reagan:"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it.
