  • Building 8.8 Rear End

I have a 2000 mustang GT and am looking to replace the axles and diff to 31 spline. How difficult is this to do in my garage? I will be re using the 3.90 gears that are in there now, so I will not be touching the pinion gear, just need to worry about shimming the diff correctly and getting the proper backlash set.

Does anyone have a dial indicator with magnetic base and micrometer I may borrow?

Does anyone want to supervise me so I don't F it up?

    I am located in McKinney.

if you already have a trak-loc carrier

get 31 spline side gears for it, use the shims you have in it now, nothing changes. Those carriers are fairly percise from unit to unit, likely you can just use the existing shims for another carrier too if you can't get 31 spline gears.
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.

I already ordered the Ford Racing diff since I got it brand new from American muscle for $159, and ordered the axles from Brothers Performance for $237
