  • Timing cover gasket 302.

    91 302.

The question I have is about the oil pan gasket.

Haven't done It yet, just trying to figure it out before I get into it.

The gasket setl comes with what looks like small gaskets that fit in the corners of the pan exposed. But it also says it may call for replacing the pan gasket..

I know there is a way to do it w/o pulling the pan. Please share. Thanks.

The timing cover mates up to approximately 10% of the pan. In the front of course. After you pull the timing cover, you will have to cut the corners off of the existing cork pan gasket (only the areas that are left exposed by removing the t/c). That's what the small cork corners are for. Then, replace the rubber half-moon under the front seal and the blue flat gasket itself. Oh, and I always put a small amount of RTV in the area where the pan, t/c and the block meet. That will be the exact place where you cut

It's perferrable to replace the pan gasket, but you can loosen the front four pan bolts that go into the block, cut the old gasket from the front of the pan flush with the timing cover face on the block, and use the replacement gasket from the set on the front of the oil pan. Use silicone at the joint where the old gasket meets the new one on the pan. You may have to push downward on the timing cover while installing it if you have dowel pins on the block that it slips over.

Mike , If your car has a one piece rubber oil pan gasket you may not even have to replace that part if you are careful on removal . Make sure to pay close attention to the round ports on the cover where the water passes thru it . Make sure it is in good shape and not eaten up . This is very common and can be a big problem . Use a light coat of permatex on both sides of the gasket around those holes .

Be sure you drain the block good, otherewise it will fill your oil pan with coolant. Or not and just change the oil. Very messy though.

Also check real good where the water flows to make sure its not pitted. When I did my Jeep the holes only had maybe an 1/16 of an inch left in spots. It was a 302 before the haterz start. LOL

                        Got it done.

Was easy, but for future reference.

Pay close attention to where each bolt and stud go. Because they are all differant.
