DOT regs for personal truck/trailer links?

Sorry Matt, late to the party.

Whenever I haul anything, I derate to 25k, run everything private and claim a certain degree of ignorance - literally, if you have all of your DOT stuff in order but lack CDL, or some other piece of flare, they'll hammer your ass. Not saying this is right, or works 100%, but I've been fortunate.

DOT laws literally vary by state. It is almost impossible to know what constitutes legal in each state. I'd throw "Private - not for commercial use" decals on the trailer and truck, and just roll it.

I don't have exact numbers yet but I think the gooseneck, based on most current designs, will put too much weight on the rear of the truck exceeding the rear axle labeled weight rating. Most goosenecks have the axles so far back, they bury the rear of the tow vehicle. These new TAGs with spread axles (72" between the axles) carry only about 15% tongue weight. Cars and trailer will weigh around 11,000#, gear and support stuff another 2k. that ends up being around 1950lb of tongue weight which the class V hitch I am looking at should handle that and with a W.D. hitch and rear bags, it should be good to go.

What I am finding out in this little research project is that a large portion of our buddies who are towing 44' goosenecks with 1 ton DRW trucks are just waiting for the reaming at the weigh station.

I am looking at ATC trailers right now but the prices are frightening. going to see what other vendors are out there.

as for the inspections, does the DOT go off the manufacturer sticker on the trailer and the truck or do they have some special database? I would think they only have the labels to go off of for everything including the tires?

If you're private, hauling private, labeled as private, then why in the hell would you enter a commercial weigh station?

No weigh stations for private recreational use. Listen to gooseneck advice. You ever backed up a 34' bumper pull? Get air bags if worried about tongue weight

I knew a guy that use to haul his races cars around with a small 3 car hauler(the kind that you see hauling new cars). He got nailed by DPS one time and they used the excuse that the cars had license plates on them even though they were his personal cars.

With that said, DPS sucks.

I had a neighbor of mine got nailed by DOT about 7-8 years ago. He was hauling cars(actually for hire,no paperwork sort of like his personal shit) but with no signs etc on truck. He was right at 26k, had cdl-A as he drove 18 wheelers for years. Wanna say something along the lines of if the trailer capable of hauling 14k, goes by commercial rules here in Louisiana. His ticket was $2200 and parked right there till paid. He also had to lease his 3/4 ton on as a hotshot and run signs, logbooks etc after that.
As said laws vary from state to state, i'd be calling dot up and get your shit legal b/c that chicken house at the 512 used to have some chicken shit DOT officers working in there.

So the sticker on the door of my truck says GVWR of 9000lbs. However it also says that the front axle is rated at 4750# and the rear is 6010#. What would the DPS a-hole say the rating is when combined with the trailer at 16000# for GCWR?

I'm about ready to just say fugg all this and stick with our little trailer and then tow the second car with a second truck! LOL!
