  • msd issue

I'm having some trouble out of my Msd ignition system intermittently cutting out. It won't kill the car but will pop through the exhaust. It's acting like it is dropping signal for a brief second. I have ohmed the pickup shows good, tested the coil shows good, substituted a new coil and tested the box....I'm stumped....anyone had a issue like this

Their Techline is pretty helpful. It's almost always been the pickup in the ones that gave me problems.

Yea their techline said it either works or doesn't. Me and brooks think its the pickup.ill have one by the end of the day.

My 6al would cut out once it warmed up.... but the engine would die and not start for a few minutes until it cooled off ( sometimes less than 5 minutes....other times it would take 10 min to restart). I posted up on the MSD tech forum and they fixed my 8 yr old box for free under "warranty". If I remember right it was a resistor. Maybe you have one starting to go bad?

It was a b*tch to narrow it down to the box because the problem only presented itself when it got warm enough and it was intermittent. The box always tested good.... except right when it did it. If I did not test it IMMEDIATELY when it happened then it never showed problems with their tests.

I also had issues with blowing blaster 2 coils. MSD asked how I had it mounted and then sent me a free Blater 3 Vibration coil. I have mine mounted to the engine block. (When the coil would blow it would leave me sitting and the only fix was a new coil on it...so it was an entirely different issue than my intermittent problem).

This issue never kills the car, I'm thinking the pickup is going out as it seems like its losing signal to the box

If you have exhausted all options with the ignition.
I would look at the carb. I ran into a similar issue years ago and it ended up being some trash in the metering block.
                    Good luck!
