  • Where to find 9" Ford Axle Vent

My 9" rear end has started leaking again on my 65. I looked under there and noticed that there is a portion of the gasket that has blown out towards the top where the pumpkin mates to the housing. This leads me to believe the vent has clogged and pressure has built up inside the housing.

Does anyone know where I can find the correct axle vent for it? I am not sure if the current vent that is on there was the original one from the 65 and just put on the 9" housing or if the 9" housing would have a different vent all together. I have located a vent specific to 1965 Mustangs... just not sure if it will fit in the 9".

They should all be the same, or very similar.

A simple vent would be a pipe fitting with a hose barb on the end of it (like that one). Hose clamp around a foot of rubber hose to it, and secure the loose end to the floor of the car. Some people put filters on them, but in my experience that doesn't really help anything except provide an easy way to clog up the vent tube. I would mount it without one, thusly:

From what I remember the one at CJ pony looks about right. I have not been under the car in a while but it has the brake line distribution block and the vent w/ tube is attached to that. When I have time to get under there I will take the vent off and make sure it resembles the one at CJ.

      Thanks

Which do you think is the best way to seal the 3rd member....

        1) Gasket and Sealant
        2) Black RTV silicone?

I was searching on Summit and found that cometic makes a rubber w/ steel core 9" rear gasket in a 0.020" and a 0.047". I am leaning towards one of these even though they are a bit more expensive than the normal axle gasket.

I am assuming that 0.047 would be the better gasket because of the thicker rubber would allow more gasket compression and take care of any imperfections in the mating surface.

I use the Grey RTV gasket sealer and never had any problems with it.

Just use some goop. I think those high-dollar cometic gaskets are intended to be reusable.
